The Net Nostalgia Thread.

Dialing up to Demon Net, 28.8 modem on an ISA card which later became a USR 33.6 and then a no-name 56K soft modem. Dragging the telephone extension lead into my room to get my 486 SX25 on the Internet, IE4 and the now very alien feeling of "err, so what do I do now? Yahoo?"

Weirdly I'd overlook my MBP, wireless and 10mb cable to have another nostalgic sniff at days gone by. Then again I nearly got all misty eyed when I heard a Spectrum 128K loading a tape the other day, so perhaps not. :D

Nah, mine was about that long.

Anyone every use winmx?

Lol, that was awful. I loved altavista and lycos. Think my first ISP was compuserver, it's amazing that we take the internet for granted now!

Back in the Dark Ages when friends and I used to play Command and Conquer online. We would have to stagger the times we connected to the Internet, otherwise we all auto-disconnect after 2 hours. At least one person had to stay in the game to keep it going :p

Also calling someone on the phone to tell them to get online and on MSN Messenger! Classic!

EDIT: ^ YES! I remember WinMX. Also one called Morpheus. There was another I used too, something like Galaxy or Satellite... you downloaded this little app and you chose the music off a website. All terribly hi-tech!

Discovering mp3 files from a mate at university and the Winamp software that played them.

Also, arranging games of Red Alert by phone and taking sharing the costs of playing a game against each other - and having the parents moan at us for hogging the phone line!

Hehe amazing thread!

Perhaps not as old but did any of you play Planetarion? This dominated my internet life in a big way before you had to start paying for it!

I played the first, second and third round. I used to wake up in the middle of the night waiting for the next tick to start my research/construction :D

Dialing into mates computers to play Starcraft.

The original Napster (also on dialup)

ICQ (Ehohhh!) Can still remember my ICQ Number too.

DialUp services that gave better pings on Team Fortress, Counterstrike servers etc on 0845 numbers

Ultima Online and mouse macro applications to mine overnight. *YOINK* *YOINK* *YOINK* *YOINK* :D

Connection strings that gave placebo speed increases when you connected up your modem :p

I wasted many a day on that game, first round I was part of the #1 alliance which I have forgotten the name of. Second round was in the #2 alliance and then I got fed up of getting up in the middle of the night to launch co-ordinated assaults on other alliances so they wouldn't get a warning til it was too late.

Edit: Concordium, that was it, loved having [ConC] on my planet name.

We used to play Planetarion in school and always found a way around them blocking it :D

It was not the first of it's kind however, there was an earlier one that was based around Medieval times with spys and stuff we also played lots! I cannot remember it's name though :(
