The Net Nostalgia Thread.

Having a personal site on angel fire with the super metroid theme tune in MIDI with marquee text YEAH!!

and downloading things like that annoying purple monkey :( that wanted to take my passwords

I remember when I was a naive newbie and my "mate" sent me a backdoor trojan over ICQ. He could control my CD tray, turn the screen off etc. :D :(

I'm going to say it. Adult material.

I used to wait until everybody left the house open up loads of windows and click onto as many photos as possible.

Then come back to the machine 10 minutes later.

Giggidy.

I remember the page in the OP, wasn't at my house though, my uncle had AOL way back when, probably over 10 years ago, I went on chat and people asked where I was from, I said Wigan, and they asked which state I was in, when I said "none, it's in England" they were all genuinely surprised to be talking to someone from the UK

I remember being in year 7 or 8 at school, i think, and coming home to find my Dad had upgraded our Demon dial-up to...1mb Blueyonder!

I actually boasted at school the next day.

Kazaa Lite K++ was amazing. Didn't like Morpheus and obviously used Napster a lot.

anyone remember freeserve dialup connection? £10 a month for UNLIMITED dialup with that odd box you get from them to plug in your socket?

yup :) it was epic, you had to disconnect every 2 hours to ensure you didnt get charged or somthing.

i used napster and downloaded over 6000 songs, i had a program to reconnect it whilst i slept! :D

Hehe amazing thread!

Perhaps not as old but did any of you play Planetarion? This dominated my internet life in a big way before you had to start paying for it!

Oh god yes, I played the first ever round. It spread through our year at school like wildfire, every lunch time we would all race to the comp lab and there would be about 25+ of us trying to load the pages off a shared 128 ISDN line, fun times! xD

I look back at the mid/early 90s on the net with hazy eyes and then I remember just how terrible it was, thank the lord. Netscape > *!

USENET and webs sites in text.

This. The images and garish "sites" came way later. I got free dial up for about five years too. :D Trinity Mirror had a free service, iC24 or something? They only advertised it in the paper for about a year, as a free reader's service that worked between something like 6pm and 12 midnight.

Everyone evidently forgot about it once they stopped running the little ad. Whether intentionally or not though(?) the 0800 number accepted logins for a good five years after that, 24/7 too. Free internets win! It did mean we were unobtainable by telephone for the best part of 1995 to 2000 though. :D
