The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Thanks. It will be used mainly with a 500mm f4 L IS, though I'll now have the option of using a 2x TC as well as the 1.4x along with the AF/ISO benefits it brings in comparison to the 7D (which itself is a great camera).

This is my thinking exactly. The single drawback is that I'm finding hard to justify the cash spend on a 500 F4. Also the prospect of lugging it around at my age!
ATM I'm just concentrating using it with a 300 F4 and 400 F5.6 with both Kenko TC's.

Good news hope it goes well.

Looking forward to receiving my new lens..35 1.4G incoming...

Cheers, I think for me it was actually more pressure shooting as a second. Not only do I want to produce work worthy of the bride and groom, I also don't want to let down the chap I'm shooting for! I'm going to line up some pre wedding shoots soon, I might have a solo wedding in August now as well as the one later in the year (and one next May!). I really enjoyed it, but it really does take the weekend and family time away :(

Got your 35 1.4G yet? I've picked up a 35 f2 cheap for the moment, see how that goes.

I almost have enough funds to replace both my mkii to mkiii....

Well when you want to sell your 5DII... :D

I've only just bought the X100 which I love, but if I am going to do more weddings I need a second DSLR body. So sadly I might have to sell it :(

I usually hook it up to the tripod/gimbal and carry it on my shoulder, the weight isn't so bad, you get used to it in no time.

The bag came today, fits the 500 + body with a little tweaking to the velcroed compartments. I'll still have to carry the tripod in hand though as it's too big to put on the back of the bag with the gimbal mounted (Gitzo 5541LS + Wimberley II). Can still get another body + lens (gripped 7D + Sigma 70mm macro) in there, plus there's another compartment for bits and bobs and my waterproofs. Makes sense having the lens in a bag, attracts less attention and it'll make the trekking about easier and more lens friendly ;) About 90% of what I shoot is raptors (wild only, not interested in captive birds/falconry centres etc as anyone can do that, finding the habitats and the birds and sussing their habits is all part of it for me) which involves a lot of walking off the beaten track.

PPI claim paid for the lens/tripod/gimbal but however you do it it's a lot of money. I've got a 300mm F4 L IS as well which the missus tends to use on her 7D with a 1.4x. Not a bad lens as it's got a great MFD which is useful for insects/flowers as well as bird and beast.

Apologies for the long post.

Just a beginner here with secondhand cannon 300d but a customer who comes in to my shop(barbers) called Colin Garratt is a steam train photographer and I asked him what camera he has and he said something like an cannon eos 1d? Is that a good one?

85mm 1.8 and a QuickStrap (cheaper version of a blackrapid)

So much easier and more comfortable for carrying the camera around compared to a neck strap, the difference is massive

35G came in the post today.
After some initial testing it seems to be what I'm looking for to compliment my 85. Tbh it has made me appreciate my 85 more as it's sharper and focuses allot faster, I'm not a fan of 3rd party lenses (especially Sigma), but they knocked this lens out the park imo, so much so I wouldn't want to swap it for the 85G.

Yes the Sigma 85 will ultimately replace my Canon f1.8 but I need to sort out a backup body first if I'm going to carry on doing weddings... Do I go for a 5D or 7D (7D would get more use outside of weddings than the 5D), or just save some more and get a 5D2...

Did you label the pics wrong on purpose? :D

I'd get a 5Dc or if you can, another 1ds ii as it's better to be using two bodies that are the same imo.

Wouldn't get a 5dii as personally I don't think it offers enough over a 5dc to justify the increased cost, and the 1ds AF is more useful than the mega-pixels imo, and ISO isn't far behind the 5dii. As for getting a 7D, personally I wouldn't want to deal with the crop factor and have to juggle my lenses around if I needed to call upon it during a wedding, however I'v never really been a fan of the 7D.

Personally I'm looking to get a dual camera strap and use 2x D700's, one with the 35mm mounted, and the other with an 85mm on it, and then just use a wider angle prime for the few times I need to go wider. After the 35g blowout, I really need to start saving for a 2nd D700...

Just picked this up for my upcoming holiday to sharm el sheikh

-G10 boxed with all orig bits
-Canon underwater housing - good to 40m
-Fuji remora flash unit with fibre optic cable
-flash flexi arm and bracket
-Fantasea bigeye wide angle wet lens
-Bigeye grabber (holds fantasea lens onto flash bracket when not in use)
-Canon buoyancy weights

, just wish they had a FF 35mm 1.4.

+1
Love my 85 to death, would happily trade my 50 for a Siggy and would probably convince myself I needed a 35 if they brought one out. My 24 1.8 is okay, but then it's an old lens and it gets the job done, plus no other lens really offers the same sort of close focus shots which I love. Still, if they bring out an HSM 24 I'll probably swap to that.

Some day I'll probably fall victim to the Canon L bug but that will be after I get a 5D3 which is a good few years down the line. For the moment Sigma's EX line does me just dandy
