The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Agreed on that Andy, I picked up an RX100iii over the weekend and that is a true pocket camera!

That said, from initial playing this morning, the RX1 is in a different league in terms of performance and whilst not truly small it's definitely portable enough for me compared to my old FF Nikon gear :)

It is an astounding camera for what it packs in. Full frame and a Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 with leaf shutter. I look forward to seeing some shots taken with it.

My triggertrap for canon arrived today, did yours take weeks to arrive too?
Not had much chance to play around with it so far, but first impressions are good!

Yes but its for the new sony multi usb interface so they are brand new, plus the V3 has only just come out.

I am confused, what's wrong with a cable release?

Nothing but this is more like a complex intervalometer. Can be set up for loads of options, i like the sound activation, whistle to take a photo.

few new bits

On the way (in the post) I've also got a nikkor 85mm 1.4, MT190CXPRO3 tripod, sirui k-40x head, sb910 flash and an L bracket

and an empty bank account :p

If you want a second hand RX1 Raymond, LCE have a few for sale around £1500. It isn't really pocketable though. The body is small but that lens sticks out a fair way. It is only 5mm thinner than a 5DMKIII body without the lens.

If you want to see how big it is compared to a 5D MKIII, take a look at

http://camerasize.com/compare/#468,312 (you can alter the orientation of both cameras in the panel to the left).

It is a really good site to see how big cameras are

If you want a 35mm lens on a decent pocketable camera, get a Fuji X100s :)

The RX1 never made much sense to me after Sony released the A7 line. The A7R and a 35 you could get for about £1600 new which also made the RX1 less appealing.

Only if you're happy with a f2.8 35mm lens...

The A7R and 35mm are still £2.2k now.

If it had at least been F1.8 I would have taken a look but it's too slow for my taste.

Just ordered a 35mm F1.8 for my D810 to use along with my 85 1.8.
I picked up a D810 with the 85 1.4 and then picked up another with the 85 1.8 on. The weight difference was quite pleasant. Recently I had done a couple of 14 hr days back to back and I had literally worn the skin off my finger tips from where I had been gripping the camera.

So I may try swapping out the 1.4 for the 1.8 and see how I get on. The lighter weight as well as the quieter shutter has reduced my enthusiasm to move to mirrorless quite so soon.

With that said, the rumoured RX1s with a more compact F1.8 lens and curved sensor has made my ears p.r.i.c.k up. Would love Sony to make an 85mm version to be partnered with it, like what Sigma recently did with a set of their camera's.

You could get the A7R, 35 and 55 for that price from Hong Kong. The f/2 or f/2.8 wouldn't make nearly as much difference as being able to change the lenses. The RX1 was a good stab but way overpriced and too limiting when you look at the A7 line. A really good deal on the RX1 is the only thing that would sway it but they still look expensive in the UK used.

Just purchased this, it's soooooo much sharper than the kit lens I had before :D:D:D

I'm interested in how the curved sensor works out, it should allow smaller, simpler, better lens. Unfortunately the radius of the curve means its really only suitable for a single matched lens of a fixed focal lengths so perfect the the RX1 type system but not so good for mirorrless/dslr.

I don't think an 85mm version would be that small, at a minimum the front element would have to be about 8.5cm form the sensor plane so minimum about 9.5cm deep. OF course it could be a collapsing lens type. Panasonic and Olympus have been showing what is possible with lens miniaturization (putting aside the small sensor, their own lenses having been getting smaller and smaller).

Sony's FE lens roadmap includes some faster primes but they seem behind in releasing them. Supposedly a 35mm f/1.4, 35mm 2.0 with OSS, a 50mm f/1.2, 24mm f/2.0 etc.

When that happens the system will become much more interesting.

The thing is you could a Fuji X with their fast 35mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.2 lens
and be in a similar or better DoF and light gather ability.

The system isn't quite there yet for mass appeal. Lack of lenses and mediocre AF.

I'd always go with the bigger sensor and especially the current Sony sensors. Cameras with lenses matched specifically for them can be excellent, like the Sigma Merrill or the RX1 but the sheer versatility and quality of a full frame sensor with top quality interchangeable full frame lenses has the best of both worlds.

These small FF bodies don't handle well with fast glass, I'll always prefer a DSLR body for that use. An A7 with smaller MF glass is appealing though. I went the crop sensor mirrorless route because of the overall size and handling.

Not at release you couldn't, and you still have to add vat and import taxes on top now.

I have no photo of it, but bought myself a Nikon 10-24mm lens, was on sale in the shop for 500 euros. Couldnt say no to that and its a great lens for my Nikon D7100. Need a flash next.

The A7R/35/55 was about £2.5k at release from a well known Hong Kong dealer paying with bank transfer. A used RX1 only makes sense if you are getting it ludicrously cheaply.

So over £3k once you've paid the taxes.

An A7R with the 35mm f2.8 doesn't interest me in the slightest. The RX1 is reckoned to have one of the best 35mm lenses going, and the results are impressive.

No taxes to pay. The A7R is even more impressive given you can mount just about any 35mm lens ever made on it. The RX1 + having to buy an EVF and being limited to 35mm and f/2 was a good first attempt but the A7 line really takes it to a whole new level.
