The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

YN-560 III and YN560-TX kit I recently got had an upgrade today. Managed to sell them in under 24 hours along with the 430EX I (Got £74 for that on eBay!).

Enter the YN-565EX II, YN-622c x2 and YN-622c-TX commander.

Works nicely in E-TTL II:

The transceivers and commander will control Canon Speedlites too but fat chance I ever get one of them as the prices are so lol considering the Yongnuo ones are virtually identical barring a couple of features (no HSS being the biggest one so only 1/200s max sync speed, no issue for me as I only use flash at night anyway).

All of the above cost less than a single 430EX II (UK price :p)...

You don't even need to buy the 622c-TX, just the 622c/n is fine if you have a body with external flash control. All of the custom function options and flash settings are in the Flash menu on my 5D3, the same controls that you can adjust on the commander but of course it does mean hustling through menus every time you want to change a flash setting and in typical Canon fashion the Flash Settings menu does not retail the last selected option menu position so you have to go into the menu then scroll back to where you were if you simply changed one value and want to change it back.

For the sake of a bit extra it made sense to have the commander unit instead of a 3rd 622c solo acting as camera controlled commander.

-_- Comedian in the house :p

RTFMing just now and it turns out HSS is supported on non HSS flashes such as Yongnuos using a special mode called SuperSync. You just enable it and set the time delay parameters in the controller menu.

Your move Canon? :p

Those aren't the latest most superduperest Yongnuo flashes are they? Or are they? lol

There was one announced last year that was supposed to be all that but they forgot to actually make any and now I've forgotten what it was called :|

The 622c/n-TX did come out recently and are for Canon/Yongnuo flashes that are E-TTL compatible from 430EX II onwards^

The one you're thinking of is the YN-E3-RT which controls the Canon 600EX and the soon to come YN-600EX-RT equivalent. If you only have Canon 600EX flashes and don't want to pony up the ridiculous Canon price for Canon's commander then Yongnuo is the only 3rd party solution out there.

Yeah that YN-600EX-RT is the one I was thinking of! It's only been about a year since they announced it :\

Yeah the latest release is supposedly October. If it was out now I'd have been inclined to pay the extra and get that kit instead but this will do for now :D

What do you think the price will be roughly? Keep meaning to buy a flash and whilst I don't have much need for one, I'm sure I could find uses for one lol.

I figure if I buy one I might as well get one with lots of bells and whistles and that way I'm not restricted but if it's gonna cost the same as the regular Canon Speedlites then I'll do without lol

MKe sure you do a review once you have played with them.
I'm looking to buy a second flash for redundancy reasons but I rarely shoot with a flash so hate to spend Nikon retail prices !

For a good idea of how much it will be let's look at how much more recent unit are vs the Canon competition.

Canon ST-E3-RT:
UK price: £240 (Amazon).
Grey import: £194~.
VS
Yongnuo YN-E3-RT:
UK price: £91 (Amazon).
Grey import: £80.

And

Yongnuo YN565EX II:
UK price: £67.50 (Amazon).
Grey import: £62.
VS
Canon 580EX II:
UK price: £280~ (Google).
Grey import: £244.

So from that I get the idea that the YN-600-RT may cost around the £150 mark considering the Canon 600EX-RT currently goes for £400 or £340 import.

Ah of the flash or the whole kit do you mean?

I'd wait for the YN-600-RT.

Built in wireless is so handy, less attachments, less to carry, less battery to change. Just less hassle. Done the whole 580EXii with Pocket wizard thing, it works but 600EX-RT just does it better.

Not cheap mind!

^And once the YN600 is out I can sell the 565 kit without losing too much money since they're so cheap anyway and seem to hold value well still.

The probability of being able to buy 2x YN600-RT + the YN-E3-RT for less than a single Canon 600EX-RT is very high :D

One could say they are so cheap anyway why save £10 for a second hand when you can get it new? :p

It will be cheaper, yes, even at £200 it'll be a bit of a bargain for what it is but had the 600EX-RT for 18 months now...was glad to see the back of Pocket Wizards tbh.

People will buy the 2nd hand one though instantly. My last kit sold completely in under 24 hours.

Yeah the Pocket Wizards and others like it do have a rather love hate following online. I think this is where Yongnuo come into their own. They have a range of products that fit into a market and they just work. That and their developers actively take part in big forums and push out information and updates.

Just looking around Canon forums and I can see one YN guy posting help and firmware updates newer than the ones found on the Yongnuo website for the YN622c-TX.

Am currently in the process of replacing my 580EXII & ST-E2 with a 600EX-RT and YN-E3-RT. Will then add another 600EX-RT or YN600-RT at a later date, depending on what the latter is like.

Really don't see the point of the Canon ST-E3-RT. Not only does it lack the AF assist light but it's very expensive for what it is. Frankly you'd be far better off finding the extra cash for another 600EX-RT. Not only does the YN-E3-RT have the AF assist but it's cheap enough to make sense instead of another flash.

Don't get me wrong, PW has a range of products that "come into their own" too, and you see them everywhere in professional studios, it's actually all you see (See Phottix time to time), I have never seen Yongnuo though! I was just glad to get rid of them because of the reasons set out above. It wasn't that they didn't work, just built in is less hassle.

p.s. I have some Yongnuo manual triggers too, costs next to nothing, probably save it for emergencies.

Few bits and bobs, and a new tripod, surprisingly - Gitzo now include snow-feet and spikes with their tripods, was a nice find in the bottom of the box, and will come in handy at white sands New Mexico next week :-)))

Some memory cards, a Lee 105mm circular polariser, storm shield, spare battery and a card holder..

I've already waved the willy about this particular piece of kit but I'm just looking through the photos of the first Airshow I've been to with the 200-400mm and :D
