The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Although I am new to the SLR world, I am already pretty sure wildlife images will be my interest when out hiking around various parts of Scotland at weekends.

So picked up a 2nd hand Nikon 70-300mm VR ED lens, reviews were excellent and although its too early for me to feel comfortable dropping the kind of money a new one would have cost the 2nd hand one was a much more sensible £180 from Wex Photography (inc 12 month warranty) and in great condition.

I now need to convince the GF that a romantic walk around Loch Muick is in order this Saturday :P

Also I was not prepared for the size of the thing, did make it feel more worth the money though.

I used to have one of those. Good lens for the money, although obviously the aperture can be limiting in low light.

Nice and sharp for a zoom -

It's the LG 34UM95-P

I had the 27" Dell U2713HM (2560x1440) and U2412M (1920x1200) in dual screen setup and this new screen offers me more flexibility really while maintaining 3440x1440 at 34".

Can have Photoshop and Lightroom open in one view and see plenty of image to work with :)

Long bump mrk but have you connected a console to that at all? I wondered if it looked odd :D

I'm still trying to find the right monitor :(

From what I have read elsewhere, it will display a 1080 image in the middle with big black bars either side of the image.

Bought a 35mm 1.8G Prime from a work mate as new for £70

Also got a Lowepro Slingshot 202AW to carry everything in, think I am done for now and will actually spend the rest of the year attempting to take photographs which are not awful...

Hopefully between the 18-55mm, 35mm Prime and 70-300mm I should have my beginner needs covered.

Anybody have an FX Wide Angle they are looking to shift??

Wanting something around 17mm and 24mm :D

I just missed a Tonkin 17mm on Talk Photography... gutted :(

Thanks, I guess it's really odd. Shame I really like the look of the monitor but don't think I could get on with the bars if I attached a console :(

I might go two 24's instead.

Me :D

First thing that grabbed me coming from the Nikon 35mm was the weight. This has some serious heft! (~800g vs 200). The build seems spot on.

Taken a handful of indoor pics and it seems good so far with accurate AF, will need to spend more time with it for a verdict. I've had the 35mm stuck to my D5100 for 2 years so the added FoV is a breath of fresh air.

Surprisingly loud STM considering it's supposed to be better for video. Doesn't bother me as I do not make any. Really nice lens otherwise on my 100D, perfect match I think. Also been offered £45 for the 18-55 STM to go towards the 10-18 STM at LCE, making it £195. Mulling it over now.

The 24mm STM is fun :) Not super duper for video with the lack of IS but the STM is quiet when doing video! Just not that quiet when it's focusing as quick as it can for stills.

Matt Granger seemed to like it and compared it favourably with the Nikon 14-24. With most of these third party manufacturers it's a lucky dip if you get one that is good or you're unlucky and get one that was made on a Friday afternoon. They will sell a few though and I might be tempted.
