The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Bought myself a lovely D7200 + battery grip whilst in Japan. Terrible picture, but a quick shot taken to compare size with D3200.

It's the pursuit of sharpness which seems to becoming a bit of a blight on modern photography as it is being prized above everything else.

I think so too... hopefully when they reach their sharpness goal, they'll bring the "life" aspect back into it :)

Brought a couple of boxes back with me from Basel... typically it's raining, so don't really want to go on a walk for some better shots.

Sigma box surprised me when they brought it out from the warehouse :D

Now I know what the reviewers meant when they mentioned it's built like a tank... the finish on the whole unit is absolutely fantastic... really beautifully made and the metallic finish is exquisite.

Couple of test shots at 600mm F8 from my home office window... it's better at 600mm than the Nikkor 70-200 vr ii with TC20E-III at 400!

Nice, I received the Tamron 150-600mm Nikon fit lens today, thinking of returning it as the box was bashed up on all corners as the packaging was **** poor, does this seem petty?

I always take good care of items and packaging so just found it very frustrating so little care would be taken when spending so much on an item.

Thats my 55-300mm Nikon being dwarfed on the left.

That 150-600 Sigma looks just like the 120-300 F2.8 I had for a little while :) It looked and felt nice but it just wasn't what I needed! I remember thinking the box was pretty damn big until I got the 200-400 in the post! That box almost didn't fit in my car.

The 100mm F2.8L is my oldest lens now! It doesn't get as much use as it should since the200-400 is pretty much glued on but I like to make a point of using it now and then.

My latest acquisition isn't the typical camera kit... It's tactical pants! Woohoo lol

http://www.511tactical.com/stryke-pant-flex-tac.html

Ignoring the name, these are awesome trousers! I was out in a pair of jeans and when I bent down to sit on the grass I managed to tear a hole in the ass of my old jeans so I decided I needed a bit of an upgrade.

These trousers aren't cheap but I'm definitely in love with them (as much as you can be with a pair of trousers).

They fit great and stretch well thanks to little panels of stretchy fabric dotted about the place. It's like wearing cycling gear but then the knees and seat of the trousers double layers of fabric.

The pockets are great too but the main reason I chose these was the fact that they have kneepad inserts you can get. The reinforced kneepads also have a little pocket where you can insert some little neoprene kneepads! No more kneeling on damn thisles :D

I'd definitely like to know your opinions on this lens. Do you shoot aviation or wildlife? I'm using the 55-300mm Nikon too, and it's doing the job for now, but I'd like more reach sometimes.

Wildlife, although I am still very new to the SLR world and to be honest thinking I've gone a bit mad buying so much so quickly.

Will be putting it to use while off work from the 6th of June and doing some travelling around scotland, its obviously massive compared to the 300mm and heavy, the tripod mound is rock solid and perfect for using as a handle for hand shots.

Will post some photos and feedback after Ive spent a few weeks with it.

Been playing with the 150-600 Sport today :)

I like it... quite a lot... it is impressing me more than I thought it would... build quality, autofocus & relative ease of use (not including weight).

It is heavy and it does tire my arms relatively quickly... but not enough that it'll cause me any problems... plus with enough use it'll build up the stamina where I need it ;)

Nice shots, I was away on a work trip today but tried to squeeze in a couple of test shots with the Tamron 150-600mm once home, seem to have a similar theme to you :D

I've wanted to take an amazing shot of the Milky Way for years, and capture all the detail of the galactic centre, but my Canon 550d wasn't cutting it in terms of ISO performance etc.

I've just placed an order for a Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm f/4 lens, and also a Samyang 24mm f/1.4.

Only extra thing I am now considering is a Vixen Polarie tracker.

If I can't get the shot I want with that kit I must be doing it wrong! :D

The real key thing is where will you take it, ideally you need somewhere with properly dark skies and I can't imagine much of Surrey will give you that.

No, definitely not dark skies where I live, but do have some locations in mind which should provide dark skies - Durdle Door on the coast should be a good one, a shot of the Milky Way above the arch. Closer to home there are some darker spots out in the Surrey Hills, or down in to Sussex.

A bit further away, the Brecon Beacons is supposed to be quite good, and I usually end up in the Lake District several times a year (which is where I managed to get my best shot yet, but like I said the 550d was really quite limiting).

Best places I have seen for stars are bryce Canyon NP and Yellowstone NP. Both are high elevation sites which really helps, less atmosphere to distort and diffuse, and they are both very remote. Yellowstone in particular is known as one of the least densely populated regions of the lower 48, new spot near the lake has a records for the longest distance to any major road.

Plenty of dark sky opportunity in Surrey! I used to ride out to Elstead common and watch the satellites spin overhead. Once took my 6" refractor there and searched for star clusters.
