The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I bought some more bits and pieces since the big purchase, the 10-22mm, Canon weather cover, Manfrotto 055CX tripod, 327RC2 head, monopod, white balance card and some books.

Had some fun on the weekend photographing girlfriend's running event, need to find time this weekend to find each lenses sweet spots on sharpness etc

If all goes well over the next few months, I will go FF early next year, maybe a 5DIII.

Got my 5D3 arriving tomorrow... Looking forward to playing with it :) I'm purchasing a set of lenses to go with it so that I have the flexibility of various lenses to share with my 5D mkii.

Already have
16-35 f2.8
85 f1.8
A whole bunch of classic m42 50mm like the fast Super Taks, Helios and SMC lenses. I have some fast tele Pentacons with 15 blade aperture = bokehliciousness!

On order

Sigma 50 1.4
Sigma 70 - 200 os

Deciding between the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC or the Canon 24-105 IS

I'm a HDSLR video shooter so a lot of my budget has to be spent of lighting and audio which is ridiculously expensive, but having two camera's will give me more flexibility and will allow me to be far more efficient. It's nice to be back to buying the fun stuff :)

24-105 defiantly for video :)

Backup arrived this morning...

Just relieved it seems to be a perfect copy, no front or back focus malarkey.

You bought a back up 85mm?

Granted, I have two 85mm but didn't buy it as a back up purpose.

Yeh I can use it as backup, or I can choose one that better suits the circumstances, i.e. one is weather sealed with better IQ, the other focuses faster etc.

Also if I need to use an assistant (brother), I can let him use the spare 85 in conjunction with a 28 1.8.

He's saying he get's two stops better performance with his 5Diii, so the noise is like shooting with 1.4 lenses compared to what he's used to.
If he's coming from a 5Dii, that is a little bit of an exaggeration, unless he's shooting Jpg and is ignoring the noise reduction...

Oh, lol DoF is what first pop into mind when someone mention F/ numbers, and not ISO.

2 stop is a bit much, more like one.

With regards to shooting video it's more like 2.5 stops raymond. You can shoot at 12800 with the 5Dmkiii and have extremely useable footage.. On the very rarest occasions would I shoot 3200 with the mkii, mostly 1600 would be the highest ISO I would use!! ;)

As above :D

But also because I use a black rapid style dual camera strap, and something like a shootsac would get in the way.

I'll probably use two lens pouches as this enables faster/easier lens changes, or at least faster than a shoot sac etc.
I used to use a similar think tank pouch, and could do lens changes in under 4 seconds quite easily...

Got a wedding in a couple of weeks, and the trouble is, is that it doesn't start until late afternoon. so did a quick ISO test with my 85mm at 9:40, to see how long I can shoot with natural light in the evening, but forgot to back out and test with dimmer light. I think about 10:15 will probably be the max.

ISO 3200 boosted 1 stop in post.

It's got some noise but it doesn't really bother me tbh. 12800 is normally the ceiling for me.
