The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I upgraded from a 5D2 with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 w. 1.4TC to a 5d3 and the 100-400L II... it broke the bank but it's worth it! Also works with the Sigma 1.4TC (f8) for that little bit more reach.

Good to know. The 100-400 II does look amazing I must say, although I'd never replace my 70-200. I need the extra reach for things like motorsport & the Mach Loop.

Bought a 2nd battery

A blower

And if you look at the back of the camera a Nikon DK-21M magnifying eye piece, It not only improves the tiny view finder it also pushes your nose away from the back of the screen as its thicker.

It seems ergonomics isn't a word in the vocabulary in the Leica co. Is it even comfortable to hold?

I picked up the grip, with that and the thumb indent it is very comfortable indeed. Without the grip I wouldn't be entirely confident lugging it around but it is still pretty comfortable.

Found the same with most cameras recently, if they don't have a grip then it is the first thing I buy. I've done the same for my Sigma DP2M, Sony RX1, RX100 and even the E-M1 as the built-in grip was too short.

Edit: Top view with grip fitted and indent showing (wrapped in spoilers as it's not that interesting!)

Amazing camera... but my mind struggles to see £2900 in a fixed lens small body camera. (albeit FF)

Is not 28mm quite wide especially given you have no other option ? (that's like me having a 14mm lens super glued to front of my MFT)

Maybe I'm missing the point, which is very likely as I'm a beginner at best :)

Just down to personal preference, I loved the RX1 which was similarly expensive but the AF was slow, MF quite clunky and I prefer a wider focal length so the Q ticked the boxes. I have several other cameras so it will compliment rather than replace them.

I don't drink, smoke/drugs or buy fancy clothes, we spend every weekend out walking, hiking, skiing, etc. We live in a cheap 2 bedroom house (in NZ with a lovely view) and most of our spare money goes towards traveling and photography which are our 2 passions so for us we can justify it.

Is it manual focus?

It's got AF which is very fast (on a par with my E-M1) for single shot, C-AF is pretty average. The MF is lovely as you'd expect, it's by wire according to the tech specs but they've done a stunning job of making it feel like it's mechanical.

My other half is eyeing up the RX1Rii as she prefers 35mm and a smaller body but I've always loved the rangefinder size/style and 28mm length.

Fair play... I must admit it's a lovely looking thing and if it's your passion then why not :)

I think all the IS in the world wouldn't cure my hands shaking holding something that valuable

My choice would be the RX1Rii but will wait for a few months after release, there are always a couple of bugs at the beginning.

The original RX1 was pretty bullet proof and I don't think it ever got a FW update so hopefully you don't have to wait too long. The images from the original were staggering and the mk2 looks even better so look forward to seeing what you can do with it Raymond as you take some cracking shots already :)

That's what straps are for :p I wrap it around my arm and hold onto it dearly...both of them (Canon in my case).

Correct on all counts. There is a petition on Change.org asking Sony to put out an updated firmware, however I think it is a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it.
