The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Shot my last wedding of the year so going to sell them both for 2 x 5D4 soon! (and sell a 5D2 as well)

Interesting. Are you upgrading for specific features or simply because it's time to retire the old ones due to wear and tear?

Just curious as there didn't seem to be that much of a different twixt Mk3 & Mk4 for stills photographers.

Not so far, I have a 1.4tc which I very very rarely use on the crop. Might use it more on a FF. Football I use the most range but very rarely 200mm on the crop. Will look through LR and see what most are roughly.

To be fair I did find myself struggling for reach a bit after switching as my longest lens was the 70-200. This lens in particular took on a whole different life on FF as it's such an incredibly useful range and almost a walkabout. I was just struggling for reach with things like motorsport and at the Mach Loop so ended up getting a 100-400.

Definitely worth checking what focal lengths you're currently using.

I want that DR and the extra few FPS.

That's it, wear and tear wise it's nothing but scuffed LCD from being a glasses wearer and the odd spots of paint gone from rubbing on the skin. Cleaned the sensor a few months ago so the images are free from dust spots.

I went through a couple of weddings with a mix of mk2 and mk3 before and the differences in files bugs me in terms of consistency in processing, white balance adjustment etc, the skin tones differs between them even ever so slightly meaning longer to process.

uhh? There is a HUGE difference in stills between the two cameras!

There is? I was under the impression there wasn't much difference but I confess I've not really read all the reviews as I'm not in the market for one.

6mp meaning it will be sharper (about 25%), still not as much as a D810 or A7r2 due to AA filter and they have higher pixel count.

It has better DR and noise handling.

Overall it produces a better image. However, if you never push your 5D3 and notices its limitation before then there isn't a point upgrading.

i saw your ninja edit. expect the new Sony A9 t have a joystick.

If its anything like the A99 mk2 but E mount and not translusive Mirror, Its the dream camera and i could wel and truelly dump all my canon stuff for that.

If i were you ray, Wait until early next year.

Wait for both Nikon and Sony to deal there cards on the table

Body aside....

The 600EX-RT is so easy to set up for wireless, both Nikon and Sony don't compare.

There is no 100L macro that I use for the ring shot.

There is no 85/1.2 which I love.

The Nikon 135mm is NOT as good as the Canon.

Plus a few other things, and to trade all the Canon perks just for 1 more stop of DR and lack of AA filter...it's like no, it makes no sense. No matter what the Nikon and Sony body does, it other stuff they still have catching up to do.

My general impression of Canon is that they don't produce the best bodies, with both Nikon and Sony superior in some key areas, but they have the best lenses. Their wireless flash system is also the current best I agree.

umm i have used the 600EX-RT on my A7r2 wirelessly. Works perfect

There is a 90mm Macro or the new 50mm macro

There is a 85mm 1.4 G master which is as good as the 85L and faster focusing.

I give you that but Zeiss Batis may be releasing one (Zeiss > Canon) IMO

Responded in bold.

I disagree with nearly all areas you have mentioned.

Unless you shoot pure wildlife/action and need glass thats over 200mm. stick with Canon.

But you do weddings mainly? The Sony system is almost ready for that. it just needs a 5D4 type body to go with all those amazing Sony E mount glasses.

You do know that you can use Canon glass on the sony? And unless your shooting fast action sport above 100mm. Adapting Canon glass for other stuff like events, street landscape, studio etc is perfectly fine for almost all Canon glass from 16-100mm.

Exactly, no 100mm macro. Re the flashes and adaptors, it is fine of you to use it casually on a trip, it is a WHOLE other ball game when shooting in a wedding. I need it to work 100% and I need to trust it. I don't trust adaptors and I don't trust Canon designed flashes on a Sony body and trust it to work 100% of the time.

There is no way I would put my work on the line for that risk, it is a deal breaker. Not even negotiable.

And the 85/1,4 is not a 1.2...I know you'll say you can't tell and the client probably client tell, like the client can't tell whether I have that extra stop DR or not...I can and I want that 1.2 dammit!

And why would I get a 5D4 and get Sony E mouth lenses?

I have 9 Canon L glass???

100mm vs 90mm? Its a none issue. You wont see a 10mm difference lol and you can slap on the 100mm on a e mount a7r2 camera easily.

I have shot one wedding earlier this year using my a7r2 and 24-70 canon f2.8 lens and i diddnt have a single problem with it.

The clients were happy and i was happy with the pics.

I do studio work as well and the 600-EX-RT work perfectly fine.

You have not experienced using adapted lenses on the sony. Heck you have not even shot with a sony. I have. I shoot both and i can form a better opinion about it.

So from a person thats used BOTH systems casually and proffesionally, The only thing lacking on the sony system is fast action sport/wildlife which it appears you do not shoot anyway.

O and about your last comment. i was saying that Sony will release a 5d4 type of camera. Thats what i meant.

I am not a fanboy. i will jump ship easily if something is better. i also make good use of all different manufacturers as at the end of the day its all tools.

No mechanic just uses one branded tools! Same goes for photographers. Why limit yourself to just one company/brand?

If i currently want the best Images/IQ the combo to use is an A7r2 with say a 24-70f2.8 lens. Perfect for wedding events. That along with my sigma 35mmART(notice its not a canon lol) is my top lenses to use and i know when using it on my a7r2, it offers the best IQ.

I prefer not to use the 24-70/2.8, I use it THAT rarely I didn't bother upgrading any of my zooms. I didn't use it at all yesterday.

And any reviews I have seen commented whilst the adaptors work, they are not as quick as the native lenses on native cameras and I NEED every millisecond that I can get.

We are talking about very small percentages here, most people will all it a non-issue, but they are an issue for me, deal breaking issue.

p.s. I thought about getting the Sigma 35 Art too to replace the 35L, we'll see. I have the 50 Art too and it is nice.

But again, lack of thumb stick, lack of Dual cards = not in a million years.

Thats what i mean about a sony 5d4 type camera aka the A9.

If it came with dual slots and a joystick, what will you be worried about?

So you are a prime shooter? Good because Sony have some amazing prime lenses!

As said adapted lenses do lose some of its speed, ive said that before how if you shoot wildlife/sports then dont use adapted lenses.

Im surprised you have a 85L if speed is your absolute critical requirement because the speed of the AF on the 85L is a joke in all honesty.

A lot worse then slapping on adapted canon lens into a A7r2!!!

I hope you are ditching that for the new Sigma 85mm art! Anyways the G master sony 85mm is sensational and faster then the canon with a lot less purple fringing!

The Sony uses the prism which loses 30% of light?

The 85L trades speed for bokeh and look that I don't find on other 85mm (and to be honest, I am going to keep it to spite you....lol). And honestly, swapping bodies is one thing, swapping 9 lenses is something else, and not something I want to do.

What prism? Thats the A mount

A bit of background

A-mount sony using a prism and is a hybrid between a DSLR and a mirrorless(check out new A99 mk2 camera)

E-mount is completely mirrorless. No prism. no mirror!

You could use some of your lenses fine though :) no need to swap them. i still have my canon glass hehe.

I can't imagine myself doing that, swapping to Sony E mount, on top of the 5D4? What would be the point?

The whole reason to get the A7R2 isn't for work...it is for travels, possibly with a Zeiss 35mm but with an added perk of compatible with my lenses via mount, as bonus and as a last resort back up body at a wedding should both my 5Ds fails.
