If i want to play against a friend online, will we be able to connect to each other directly, or do we have to go to a public server? I'm hoping its just a case of one of us creating a server, and the other entering that users ip address and we're good to go. Can someone with the game say for definate?
Nope you can't do that unfortunately. You will need to either create a public internet game & password it, or use a 3rd party tool like Hamachi, to create a private virtual network - so you can see each other on the network within the game.

I've got no idea how to use it, but the tools seem to work. I can place trees, roads and flood fill the area with different terrain types. I can't work out how to place water though. I wonder if there's a tutorial somewhere...

yep, right I can now get the tools to work, but it's not very intuitive, Deff need a tuition. I want to make a big 8 player multilayer map, with a middle island surround with water, the island will have blue tiberium, with a few structures and about 12 bridges and 2 land mass connections.

tutorial videos here, right click links and save as.

as they dont seem to load in browser and the launcher doesn't work so don't download that. scroll down to the yellow section.

Just downloading first part now, so I don't know how good it is.

Edit - it is for generals but it's identical so far.

Select size you want

Suggested Dimensions:
 Single-player: no larger than 500 x 500 tiles.
 2-player: 250 x 250 tiles.
 4- to 6-player: 350 x 350 tiles.
 8-player: 450 x 450 tiles. If you’re creating a map larger than 400 x 400 tiles, you should have clear reasons to do so. For online games, you may not be able to find seven other players who can play such a large map effectively

Boarder size set to 15
Height to 0

Now you need to raise the terrain, as you can't lower it less than the intial terrain height.

So click on the Height Brush (H)

Select brush width to like 50000 This just insures all of map is raise, dont worry it wont look that big but once clicked all is raised.

Set raise height to 20 good starting place.
like so
tib1vk8.jpg

Now left click anywhere on the map and it should raise the terrain level.

You'll have to look at the edge of the map, it should have raised when you left clicked.

Now where going to add the water layer.

Click the lake/ocean tool (the same principle can be used for river and wave)

like so
tib2ys4.jpg

Now click on each corner and keep holding down and drag it so the map is in the middle, like this.
tib3sy3.jpg

Set the alpha depth to 1 (makes it easier to see and water height to around 12 assuming you raised terrain by 12-13ish. If you see what I mean

we can now use the lower terrain tool, and water will suddenly appear :)

tib4zq6.jpg

Like so.

Just use the dig and mound tool to create what terrain you want. If you don't want water in all your ditches then you need to move or create separate water layers.

The terrain level tool is excellent for manipulating large/small areas to the same heigh.

cheers mate, ill give another go at making a map soon. I had a similar idea to you, but a 4 player map with an island filled with blue tiberian in the middle.

Now you have the basic terrain with some water, you need to add the players.
Select the way point tool (w)
and place way points where you want players.

tib5zq5.jpg

Now right click to deselect, then left click on one of the way points.

tib6dl4.jpg

Do this for each way point until you reach the required number of players max 8.

now we're going to add some player conquerable buildings. So select the place object (P)

Go to Neutral > structure

Youll find structures like Tiberium spike, refinery ect in here.
