The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Hi

Finally got one of these today (currently £89 in town plus top up, so not bad!). However just spotted something that's got me slightly concerned. On the box sticker with the sim and mobile number is, the mobile number is different to what the number is on the phone itself. Is this nothing to be worried about, or should I be concerned? Know nothing about phones really, and this is the first step into android.

Also whats the best rom to install on the device atm? I intend to unlock and stick it on giffgaff sooner rather than later.

Cheers.

I wouldnt worry about that, your phone was probably originally meant to be a contract phone and would have had a diff sim etc, maybe they were out of payg ones hence the diff sim and mobile number

I need to put a new ROM on mine, its still on Gen1 sadly, but quite frankly I just want a working Gen1 ROM, can't remember what i'm on currently now.

Basically my GPS NEVER works, and sometimes the phone slows down so much, even when just typing words in to google or texting, it's so daft

Getting the wallpaper right on this phone is annoying me, no matter how small I make some pictures I still can't get the whole thing on the screen

just get quickpic gallery and you can change wallpaper through that.. this will give you a "default" box (represents the screen size/ratio) and then you choose the part of the picture to be set as the wallpaper.. if the wallpaper is wide and low in height you won't be able to choose all of it unless you messed the image it self up by changing the ratio/resolution of it.

cyagen mod 7 is amazing, i mean its on a whole different level to every other ROM i have used.

the phone is a lot more smoother, not faster, but smoother.

anyone recommend a safe overclocking value? and what app do you use to overclock?

Sorry to bump a months-old thread

My brother and his wife have asked me to find an Android phone for them, neither of them are that technologically literate so they just want a cheap one to play about with to see if they like it. After doing some looking around I saw that the original San Francisco is now £69.99 at Argos which is a pretty decent price and seems like by far the best value for money of the cheap Android phones I've looked at. They live in Germany though - will there be any issue if I buy one of these, send it out to them after putting a custom ROM on it, and they throw away the Orange SIM and put in a SIM from a German network?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm getting annoyed at the lack of internal storage, I've modded the free space alert to 3% but even with apps moved to the SD Card they still store data internally...
Has anyone moved the dalvik cache to the SD Card and has a how-to, as I can't find a definitive one?
I've bought the 16Gb Samsung Class 10 Micro SDHC, trying to find a reliable tutorial before I attempt to break my phone at the weekend....
Running FLB-Froyo r10 if that matters.

You need to be using A2SD+. Everything then gets installed automatically on the SD card and leaves your internal storage alone.

You'll find Cyanogen Mod 7 is probably a better ROM for the San Fran than Flibble. I upgraded the wife's phone from Flibble to CM7 and it's night and day better.

Procedure is:

Take out and backup your SD card to a PC. Then make sure you backup your contacts, sms, etc to your google account (so make sure they are in sync). Backup your apps with something like Titanium or MyBackup Pro

Then partition your SD card and give it an ext2 partition of around 1GB in size. The remainder of the card should be fat32.

Then copy the CM7 Blade zip file to the root of the SD card and flash it using clockwork mod. Boot up, resync your Google account and restore your apps. Use whatever launcher you like (I like Go Launcher EX) and off you go.

Thanks for that, I installed the rom as soon as I got the phone then have just left it alone as it did everything I needed.
I'll look into upgrading to CM7 :)

you guys really should sell your SF's on ebay whilst they are still worth £80+ when unlocked with CM7, etc. i got just under £100 for one a month ago.

then got the monte carlo for £90 which is a lot better (argos deal, no longer available and there was hardly any stock when i snapped it up the only one within 50 miles).

SF is so 2010. The Monte Carlo is the new £100 king.

There is also the San Fran II out now and a slightly different version of the same phone from T-mobile as well. Looking at the forums though it seems they are both more difficult to unlock and install new roms.

I have a San Fran I that I have never used other than a bit of testing when I first got it. I am trying to decide whether to sell now while it still has value or keep it and start using it.

sell it now, the san fran 2 is nowhere near as good as the Monte Carlo, and it also costs more than the MC2.

problem is you need to get in quick when prices are slashed as these types of phone always sell out within minutes/hours as so little stock is kept compared to demand.

i looked on the argos site, no stock within 70 miles, then i looked again the next day, no stock anywhere, then the next day 1 popped up in a store about 2 miles from me.

i hate people who reserve stuff with no intention of buying it. anyway it was there loss. but you really do need to check on a regular basis when the prices get slashed, i got lucky.

i would say even if you sell the san fran for £80+, it would be worth sticking the extra £30-£40 in for a Monte Carlo.

seriously guys, the Monte Carlo makes buying any £200+ phone look stupid. it is that good for the money. sure it wont get you the highest score in a bench mark, or have useless amount of cpu power, etc, but bang for buck, it beats every phone out there.

The wife has just gone over from a call/text package to a call/text/data package and is seeing a massive decrease in battery life (and know she isn't spending time on the Internet).
I've turned off the Background Data setting, anything else I can do?
