The new Samsung Odyssey G9 Mini Led

To be honest if either are any more than the current £1000-1200 G9 model I think I'm going to have to pass. I can't justify that much on a monitor. We are becoming too close to 65 inch OLEDs at that money. I wonder which will come first, an OLED between 30-40 inch or these ultra wides.

I've read the launch price is $£3,000.

You simply cannot put a massive FALD backlight on something and not expect a large price increase.

Where did you see $3000 mentioned? I expect it to be more yes, the more I think about it. Reality sets in that it simply has to be a fair bit more for a few reasons. But if $3000 is realistic, that could equate to £3000. I can't see it being more than £1500 personally otherwise it becomes so exceptionally niche they won't sell any. People will have a hard time psychologically accepting paying the same as a large sized OLED TV would cost in your lounge, for a PC monitor, which tends not to be as high a priority in terms of quality and spend over the "main" house TV. But then people spend 2.5k on 3090s so.... who knows.

it will never go beyond 1500 because you can buy their 2021 mini led tv's for that much and those are 55' TVs with even more functionality.
Ur yeah not a good comparison. Look at the only available gaming Mini LED display and that’s £3300. This Samsung will be nearer to that price than £1500. You just can’t compare the tv market to the monitor market I’m afraid.

why is it not a good comparison?

all LG tv's have nvidia gsync for example.... it's not like 15 years ago when there was clear distinction.

Asus (mini led competitor) have a reason for putting it at that point because they don't have the same distribution yield that Samsung does, it was niche because they were the only ones doing it and sure it was still new, but not a big enough reason for 3k.

I would choose a 1.6k TV over a 3k monitor which uses the same technology any day.

Pros of having a tv:
larger screen
same technology (?including gsync)
has sound
meets standard video aspect ratio

cons:
taller

It’s not a good comparison because the two markets are very different. There are technologies that are far more mature, easier and cheaper to produce and more readily available in one space compared to the other. Mini LED backlights and OLED are two good examples. Neither are easy or cheap to produce in the monitor space, both are very new. let alone when you need to pair them with monitor centric features like VRR.

Having Mini led on a “Gsync compatible” tv that at best is aimed at console gaming, but generally is aimed at movies and tv, is just not the same. In the monitor space there is a lot of R&D and cost to get Mini led dimming working properly with VRR for PC gaming which is a different ball game. In fact that’s currently only possible if it’s paired with a Native Gsync module too. That’s not available at all in the tv space by the way. It remains to be seen whether this Mini led in the Samsung works for well in pc gaming and VRR situations. Im skeptical given how hard it was to get it working with a proprietary chip and in conjunction with a leading graphics and gaming manufacturer!

So making an assumption that this screen will be cheaper than their 2021 TVs is wrong. Whether or not you’d be willing to pay more than a tv is a different matter. Many people won’t be willing, some people will be.

and there’s plenty of other reasons why a tv is a really poor choice as a monitor. Ok if you’re mainly consuming multimedia or gaming but pretty useless as any kind of productivity screen or for any “normal” monitor use

I agree with Simon, comparing this new G9 vs a TV is really silly. A TV model is sold by the hundreds of thousands if not millions with standard aspect ratios and panel sizes. This is a super niche super wide-aspect ratio LOW volume item with expensive backlight that probably only sells in the thousands. Anyone who thinks this will be £1,500 or below is going to be in for a rude awakening.

My price prediction is £1459.99
:)

Closest guess wins a hand drawing (by me), of a brand new G9. (drawing will be sent digitally)

as someone who has had both TV and super ultra wide, the only difference is the target audience. mini led on TV is just as new as mini led on monitor, it's only coming out now on monitor because the demand and focus was more on the tv side.

TVs can be configured, their resolution is the same width as a super ultrawide, only their aspect ration is different - still same pixel count.

Talking about demand for one over the other is moot, it's the technology that would seperate one from the other and in this case there is very little difference. not everyone cares for vrr (even if it's great stuff) or anything that focuses on refresh rate because at super ultra wide, not many builds can pump out the fps required to make it worth while (unless it's minecraft)

I'm gonna say around 1700, but the fact the 2020 model has dropped in price gives a hint at where it's going.

Ok well you’re entitled to your opinion, although I see you’ve now gone from “not more than £1500” to “£1700”. I’m just joking with you :)

Let’s wait and see how much this retails for. Since we are all making predictions I’m going to say £2600

on day of launch price I'm going to say "I told you it was 3400 and claim my drawing.

on a side note, Samsung released their line up and made no mention of the G9 https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-unveils-its-expanded-2021-odyssey-gaming-monitor-lineup

I guess £1800 as it has no G-sync module and no Asus TAX :D
Though Samsung has had good run of brand extra taxed SSDs...

And that's why push should be (and should have been for years) in self emissive pixel techs instead of how to rebrand same old LCD yet more times.
Besides contrast/black, self emissive pixels would also solve lots of viewing angle issues and response time issues of liquid crystals.
