There won't be an election in October. We've got fixed term parliaments now. Remember that we elect MPs, not governments.

What general election? It isn't until 2020....

While it is unlikely and would frankly be stupid in the current climate if the new leader of the Conservative party wants an election he could probably engineer the two thirds of MP's required to vote in favour fixed terms are not totally fixed!

I am pleased he looks to be out of the running. Unbelievably he has given up an almost certain Deputy PM role for a 2% shot at the top job.

Still can't decide if it is part of some longer term Boris scheme, Gove takes the fall now in exchange for a reward later? Otherwise he looks to be turning from high flyer into John redwood!

No new election will be called until the changes to constituency boundaries are done to equalise the sizes of constituencies. It doesn't make sense to go to the polls until you have removed the current bias from the system.

well the current favorite is already on record as stating brexit will occur and there will be no early general election.... and though we can't really trust politicians it really wouldn't be in her interests

Unless that bias plays in your favour, or you feel that you have something to gain, or the position of the government becomes untenable without a new mandate. Hence parliament with a 2/3rds majority can call an election at anytime.

As I said while it's not impossible it is extremely unlikely, I was merely responding to those that implied fixed term parliaments make it impossible

God I hope Leadsom doesnt win. SHe wants us totally out of the EU including the single market

the UK should not pursue single market membership....the UK economy is too large to need the single market

SO no trade negotiations needed on Brexit, just straight into the WTO.

PM? No, ta.

We'll have to renegotiate our WTO membership as well, as that is based on our EU membership.

Well okay we have to do that though.

I can't believe she has so much support yet absolutely wants to cease all free access to the EU.

Personally I think that will be an economic disaster.

The bias is in Labour's favour. Finishing off the boundary changes will make it considerably easier for the conservatives to win. I would expect to see that done first before any snap election.

How does she expect our banks to function in a European marketplace?
Or do we just lose that source of tax revenue?
Does zero relationship with Europe stand to any form of scrutiny?
