The next England manager.

why not? cause of previous history?

did you ever see a swede running the national side?

Of course, whether you like it or not, Germany are still the 'Enemy' on the football pitch and England fans are fickle creatures, same as I can't ever see an Argentinian or Scotsman at the helm.
I doubt anyone saw a Swede running the national side, but as there's no real footballing history between the countries it wasn't that big a deal although plenty weren't happy with his appointment simply because of his nationality:)

I don't understand why there is England-Germany/Argentina rivalry .. those historical events e.g. 'the war' and the Falklands are British events and not English so why should they drive the footie? Never have understood that one tbh .. I wouldn't mind having a jerry or argie at the helm to be honest

I doubt JM would do the job, although I wouldn't mind seeing him have a go, Steve Coppell plays some good football and quietly goes about his business, wouldn't mind seeing him in charge either:)

Steve Coppell was my dark horse selection to replace Sven, I think he is one of the best English managers around. However in the past there have been question marks over how he handles pressure (e.g. at Man City) which he will get in abundance as manager of England.

I think Mourinho would be great as an England manager - speaks good English, knows the English game well, very intelligent, good psychologist, tactically astute.... you can read more about why I like him (and Coppell) here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=9053316&postcount=23

As for Wenger, I think he would be a bad choice. His success has been built largely around utilising a good scouting network and an eye for talent to bring in new players and then mould them into his way of playing. To do that you need to be working with the players week in, week out, not just meeting up a few times a year. A fantastic club manager where he has license to craft his own vision, but many of his strengths would be lost on the international stage.

Granted, but isnt there an (enemy) on the pitch with portugal?
winker and penalties and all?

I would like to see a good tactition, an England manager doesn't need to be the best in the world, just great at playing players in the right position and a good motivator.

PLATTTYYYY

Who not a clue, Jewell, Alladyce?

Yep and his name's Ronaldo, England fans have been able to vent their frustration on one player in that instance so it's different:)
Mourinho would be an excellent choice, what England need is a manager who can get the best out of average players and he's done that at Porto and Chelsea.

I don't know much about his time at Porto but which average players did he get the best out of at Chelsea?:)

Its not a one way street with the history. Look at the way the argies celebrated when they last beat us in a major tournament. Their papers were full of 'revenge for the war' stuff too.

I wouldn't mind another foreigner. Hiddinks name banded about, he's a real tactical genius. How many times has he managed to beat an English team thats totally predictable?

Once?

The top club managers won't touch the job sadly. Why would they, when they get millions to buy solutions to problems.

Was just reading through this thread and was surprised that no one had mentioned Coppell until your post. I would be very happy for the FA to give him the chance. From what i can tell, he gets his teams playing to their strengths, something i've not seen England do for a long time now.

If MacLaren got sacked they'd probably give it to Venables, who else would want to manage a bunch of show ponies?
Agreed 100%

I doubt that any GOOD manager would be able to turn the England team around especially with players and their celebrity lifestyle.

Sven did a great job with Man City but he didn't do well with England so who else could?!

Having almost all England managers failed, the most oblivious answer is probably down to the English players.

They need a manager who will:

1. Teach them to pass the ball to each other tightly, and not kick the ball into nowhere in the hope someone from the same side gets it.
2. Improve the defending and goalkeeping!
3. Teach them not to get the first goal and then attempt to defend for the rest of the game, which makes the opponent team more determined to score. They should get the first goal and go all out for getting another thus keeping their opponents defending all the time!

Do we know a manager like that?

Ferguson ?

But no way in hell he will take the job.

To be honest I'd rather have a foreign manager .. someone who can take an impartial view and sling out all this passion and heart bull people keep going on about .. passion and heart doesn't win games .. using that thing between your ears and making the right decisions at the right times does ..

.. it would have won the game against Russia ..

No. Heart and passion doesn't fix idiotic defensive lapses it is the cause of them in this case. Thinking logically and using your noggin' would have gone a long way to making sure that Russia wouldn't have equalised or gone ahead. Our players were acting like headless chickens after the first goal went in. Defensively it was a complete and utter shambles. No one could string a pass together and players were hacking at the ball like it was a hot potato which they couldn't get rid of fast enough. They were acting like headless chickens in the final minutes and Russia came close to adding insult to injury by exposing us on the break. Heart and passion my bloody arse. Give me players with a brain, bottle and nerve any day of the week.

Only problem with whoever the next manager is, is that unlike at club level, he can't open the cheque book and buyquality players?

England need more than a new manager.
