Hrm I get the impression that Engadget weren't very impressed with the 3DS. The fact they are stating that they will be spending the majority of their time with the 3D slider down to off doesn't exactly sound great! Sounds like the 3D aspect isn't working as expected. The talk of having to lock your arms into position also sounds ridiculous! I expect that your head will need to be in a sweet spot but from the sounds of it that sweet spot area is tiny.
I feared this might happen as soon as I heard the news Nintendo were creating a 3D system. These early reports of headaches also doesn't sound good at all. News of the 3DS being a cause of headaches and migraines could really hurt Nintendo's sales, it would put many parents off from buying one for their children.
I would have been happier if Nintendo came out with an improved DS with capacitive touch screen and improved CPU and GPU and stuck with the trusted 2D system. Not to mention with the improvements with battery technology meaning it would last for hours between charges.
I am definitely going to sit back and watch what happens with the 3DS, but Nintendo won't be seeing any of my money not at least until version 2 of the 3DS is released.
