****The Nintendo 3DS Thread****

As a rough guess I would say its about PSP standard probably a little higher it's what you would expect from high end smartphone games with a slightly lower resolution.

The graphics chip being used is vastly superior.

I think it would be a bit optimistic to say it's gamecube quality but from some videos the lighting isn't far off at least.

ok thanks, looks great for a handheld anyway, the Resident Evil game looks better visually than any ps2/GC game :p

Not sure if theres enough games i want for pre ordering to be worth it, might wait for it to lower in price. RPG's are what id be looking forward to the most.

The content for the 3DS should look about gamecube to xbox like graphics, it might be about as powerful as a gamecube but it has a far better gpu than the gamecubes gpu with a lot more features.

Damn ubisoft for not showing their games, some place is going the 3DS with either splinter cell, ghost recon or rayman for £219, while I like the sound of these games ubi haven’t got a good record with hand-held games :(

Today I had a play on Zelda, Pilot Wings, Res. Evil, Ridge Racer, PES 2011, Dead or Alive, Kid Icarus and Super Monkey Ball.

My favourite was Pilot Wings, was also pleased with the 3D application within Zelda.

Ridge Racer seemed a bit pants. PES 2011 had some frame-rate slowdown when they cut to the players celebrating etc. Res. Evil looked great and I would consider buying it. Dead or Alive was much the same as previous titles. Super Monkey ball is a bit unplayable in 3D and using the Gyroscope, given the viewing angle characteristics it's difficult to play when tilting the console.

The augmented reality with the playing-card-things was also quite impressive!

Does it seem like the 3D function is an added functionality or just there for effect?

Is the 3D effect in Zelda and PilotWings very visible in game? I.e. does it add to the whole atmosphere of the game?

Managed to buy one of these from another retailer for £167 (but Im waiting for the inevitable - "sorry we mispriced it") emai.l :)

Zelda didnt seem an added effect. For instance in the Kokiri forest/village I was able to run about in the little fireflies were coming right out of the screen. I was actually really pleasantly surprised!

If I get a DS, Zelda was always a must buy (probably that and the next pokemon title if it actually makes decent use of the new hardware, early fans have been waiting for a full blown 3d version of those games for years :p), so glad to hear they've actually used the effect to enhance the game, rather than as a flashy cinema style effect which invariably looks ****.

I can't say for sure if it enhances the game since I only strolled around Kikiri Forest Village area.

Think I'll be getting Pilotwings on release, I prefer games I can jump in and out of for some fun whilst waiting on the train or bus.

Giantbomb said on their podcast that it was f'ing impossible to look from one screen to the other, as when you're looking at the 3D screen it's like you're focussing behind it, so when you glance to the other screen everything is really out of focus.

Hmmm.

Hmmm indeed. The more I read such things the more dubious I become about the 3D feature. I had a hunch that it was always going to be more gimicky rather than a useful feature to have turned on, and I can envisage many people probably turning the 3D function off soon after the fad wears off.

But of course thats only one aspect of the 3DS, will wait to see the actual games myself and compare the visuals to its predecessor...

Had a go on the 3DS today in Bristol.

3D effect was nice, but its not really a huge selling point for me, didnt seem to add much to any of the games, though this could change in the future when devs have more experience with it.

The AR games i thought were quite impressive, havent seen anything like that before. Though i think after about half an hour i would never play them again.

The 3D photos looked pretty terrible when i tried it. Could hardly tell it was 3d and had bad image quality reminiscent of early camera phones.

Of the games I played, Resi Evil probably had the best graphics and played similar to Resi Evil 5. DoA and Street Fighter 4 were pretty much what you would expect. Ridge Racer seemed a bit boring and the handling was a bit odd. Rabbids (2d platformer) was quite fun and has some potential but hard to tell from one level.

The Cosplay people at the start of the exhibition were good for a laugh.

I take it if a developer wanted to they could ignore the 3D function and use the full power to create an even better looking game than if they made it in 3D since it would only have to output one image instead of two?

Would be curious to see what it can pull off graphically if it wasn't having to draw two images.

You would think, but Im guessing the 3D processing is probably independent of the actual raw graphics processing. (Just a guess!)

The 3D part of any of these games is always going to be eye candy. Moving the 3DS around can't let you see 'behind' 3D objects (well actually they could do that implementing the gyro/motion sensors and re-rendering the view...), just changes the direction of the 3D effect. In saying that, it does look good! I popped in to see the demo on Saturday in Glasgow.

I played SFIV which was even better than I expected, Steel Diver was quite cool but I imagine more a tech demo than a worthwhile game, Resi was really quite nice (although you couldn't invert the Y as it was a demo, I was told), the generic racing game was absolutely nothing special but the 3D was nice - gave a great sense of speed. DOA played pretty well but I've no experience of previous versions. The Rabbids 2d platformer was also a hoot, a bit of a cross between Sonic and the old Disney platformers (think a fast paced World of Illusion). I missed Kid Icarus(!) and wasn't interested in the football.

As for the media stuff in the next room, I just didn't care. It was funny how the first room was all dingy booths with thumping dance, and good games, and the second room was very bright with no music and all the fluffy light stuff like 3D cameras, Nintendogs and the augmented reality games. I can see Streetpass as a nice bonus for games, i.e. unlocking extra characters in Smash Bros (which surely MUST make it to the 3DS, it'd be the killer app) but I'm not interested in streaming TV or making a Mii with my face on it.

Overall, good impression. I liked it and want one but it depends on decent bundling for me as the price is a bit steep. It didn't help that on the same day there was also the MvC3 cabinets at the St Enoch centre and it looked so good I now want an Xbox360! :)
