Just finishing off a bottle of Vina Tinajas Merlot 2011 I had with my steak.
I got a mixed case from
Naked Wines yesterday and this was among it. There are no big names with Naked Wines.
For anyone who hasn't heard of them, the way it works is, you can either buy wine whenever you like at the full price or you can deposit £20 a month and use that whenever you want to buy some wine. By doing this you become a "Naked Wines 'Angel'". As an 'Angel', you get a minimum of 25% off everything you buy and a free bottle of premium wine every time you buy a case. There is no obligation to buy anything at any time and, any time you want, you can have any unused funds you have paid in back.
The money you pay up front, they use to finance small producers to allow them to grow their grapes and produce their wines (whilst buying exclusive rights to the wine) - without it, many of them wouldn't be able to risk the outlay and wouldn't stay in the business.
I've had a couple of cases off them and I haven't had a bottle I haven't enjoyed. Personally I think it's an excellent idea. I'm getting decent wines at reasonable prices and that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you help people.
After the wine I will be finishing off the last of the Bolivia Finca Loayza coffee accompanied by some of the 21yo Glengoyne and some blue cheese.
