So I was at an English alcohol tasting last night. Even though it was in Glasgow, it sold out! It cost £20 a ticket, and we had 8 drinks and 8 cheeses. Great value if you ask me. Anyway here is what I drank (with the matching cheese after) and a few things that I remember:
Nyetimber 2006 - Finn
Ross on Wye Farmhouse Perry - Stinking Bishop
Janet's Jungle Juice Cider - St James
Lindisfarne Mead - Wigmore
Thornbridge Jaipur IPA - Lancashire
Samuel Smith's Oatmeal - Ticklemore
Buckfast - Montgomery Cheddar
Hayman's Sloe Gin - Stichelton
The fizz was really good, £25 a bottle or so and much better than the stuff coming out of Champagne for that price. A lot creamier, and a better taste. If I need fizz, I'll be looking for this over Moet any day!
I'm not a huge Perry fan, but it was OK. Bit boring and bland though, and others commented on how acidic and bitter it was.
The cider was your typical shed made stuff, out of a big cardboard box! Very nice, had that nice home brew taste but with a bit more sophistication. I went back for seconds!
I hate mead. This didn't change my mind at all. This is a spirit mead, which is different to your all honey meads which are much sweeter. My brother loved the stuff though!
The first of two beers was an IPA. I love American IPAs, more hops the better. This had the hops but unfortunately didn't have much of a body outside of that. I'd happily buy this beer, but it can't compete with a lot of stuff coming out of America (Sierra Nevada for example (yes, I'm mentioning SN again! Sorry!)).
The second beer was an oatmeal stout. Again, not an awful lot of body but it was surprisingly nice. I'm not a big fan of oatmeal beers but this wasn't that overpowering.
The Buckfast was quite entertaining, usually seen being drank by a scumbag in a park whilst murdering a swan but instead we were in a nice warm room sniffing it, sipping it and getting the flavours. I've drank Bucky (as it is known round these parts) on occasion a couple of times, and it turned me wild. It's not a great drink. I'll stick to Fonseca I think!
The sloe gin was delicious, a great end to the night. Just cleansed the palate nicely and gave you that nice warm feeling.
