Potato cam ahoy!
Night out at a Drunken Butcher event in Chorlton. "Around the world in 8ish steaks"
Pretty tasty though as often is the case I don't think this guy's good home cooking translates so well to a large crowd (60+ people in the venue).
I also forgot to get pics of the first two courses. The fillet carpaccio was awesome.
Left: skirt/hanger (I forget) with a lemongrass, garlic and chilli dressing
Middle: Sirloin with some kind of BBQ sauce - the sweet/savoury balance on this was really good despite me worrying about how it would turn out.
Right: Skirt with chimichurri. Skirt was amazing. My home made chimichurri is better
Various kinds of steak all cooked to perfection. The only let down was that the amount of people being served meant that the steak got cold - a fairly major let down tbh :/
More steak along with DB's beef dripping chips. The chips definitely need work in terms of texture but the flavour is absolutely amazing - way more meaty than you'd expect even for beef dripping chips. I reckon some kind of bacon fat and/or marrow is included.
The gravy is actually a mixture of two gravies on offer - one was a mushroom sauce and the other a red wine/beef gravy. They were both amazing and actually the best things served. I'm *really* into my gravy and have very high standards so the above is actually an understatement. If you love incredibly rich gravy then I recommend trying some DB dishes if only to try it.
Finally a suet-crust beef and vegetable pie with a big ol' bone sticking out of it. It was suggested that we dip some chips in the marrow hole (which we did, and it was delicious). The pastry was awesome on this but the meat and vegetables were so-so. I don't think stewing meat is the DB's strong point so I feel I could have done better at home. If I'd cooked some ox cheek and he provided gravy and pastry though.... it would've been amazing.
All in all I was a bit let down even though the food was arguably very good. I do really want to go to one of his events where it's just 8-10 of us in his house as I think it would better showcase his cooking abilities. All that said, every single steak was cooked perfectly and that's something I couldn't replicate at home so definitely hats off to the guy.
