**THE NVIDIA DRIVERS THREAD**

Serious question. Is anyone tempted to back to win 7 or 8/8.1? Seems like it would solve a lot of the recent problems people are having...

I've stuck with 7 on my gaming PC and had none of the problems many on 10 seem to be having and smoother performance in a few games like The Division where quite a few on 10 have stutter. So far not seen anyone do anything with DX12 that entices me to 10 either.

Unfortunately with newer CPUs you pretty much have to use Windows 10.

But isn't that just because Microsoft is being a bit of a tool and not actually because the cpu's work less efficient? Cause there are ways around the blocked updating on newer CPUs.

Guys, I'm on 388.31 and keep getting random grey screen crashes (driver crash?) with windows saying something about the game.exe was restricted access to the GPU driver?

Never had any issues with drivers up to this point really, using a 980Ti at stock clocks.

Speaking of Windows 7, why with Quake Champions am I getting complaints to run Aero in basic colour about running out of resources? You know the pop up? Yet the system memory and video memory aint anywhere near half full.

I have W10 Pro but seriously give it some thought before installing new drivers. I also have updates for 10 disabled, so I pick and choose what I want. I like 10 but I see loads of issues for people.

Just installing Windows 10 home now as I have lost my right to use pro after a motherboard change. I thought that the license was linked to my Microsoft account which it was but isn't anymore probably due to not activating it again last week after having gsync issues.

Fortunately I had an old Windows 7 key which activated the Windows 10 home version. There has been too many problems with Windows lately breaking things like 3d vision and gsync.

Win 7 is EOL in two years.

Win 10 is good. Expect they haven't found the right balance with enforced security updates and drivers updates. They are basically treating everyone like idiots and adopting a "we'll control the windows experience for you" mentality.

But turn it around it MASSIVELY makes windows more secure compared to previous Windows OS's as the vast majority of machines out there will be up-to-date with security patches. You can't expect the average Joe or Linda who not only knows nothing about computers but also couldn't care less to be up-to-date on security.

So enforced updates helps greatly here. It's these people who are the ones spreading worms and malware as they're systems get compromised and used in botnets.

Then you've got the enforced driver updates. They've done it like this to stop the image of poor performance in games on Windows. If the vast majority of people have the latest drivers being pushed on to their systems then theoretically issues with drivers and performance in games disappears. As long as AMD and Nvidia get their act together and sort out the drivers of course.

So it's easy to see why they take this approach.

Would be nice for power users tho to turn this nannying off as not all of us are clueless.

But over all the windows ecosystem is 1000x better for it.

Under all costs they wanted to avoid another win XP. Which is why they offered win 10 for free. They simply had to get as many people on to win 10 as possible.

This is also why they do what they are doing with the latest CPU's not working on anything other than Win 10. This is simply to get as many people on to the Win 10 ecosystem so that Win 7 doesn't turn in to another Win XP.

Now do you understand why hanging on to win 7 isn't such a good idea?

Thought this thread was about nvidia drivers, but apparently I was wrong. Where can I read about experiences of lates driver 388.59 on this site?

Thing is it would be one thing even if the Professional edition had the ability to take full control without resorting to messing about with GPEdit (which they seem to be treating progressively with the same attitude anyhow and probably will have limited ability to take control in the future) but nope - begs the question of why the Professional edition even exists really.

Recent events have shown that Windows 10 isn't really any more secure - there was that Defender exploit for one which seems to have been brushed under the carpet a bit but is kind of concerning - at the end of the day there are far too many end users who will just hit ignore on security prompts, etc. and end up with malware ridden toolbars and the like no matter how much MS tries to enforce security and the OS is still a long way from the kind of admin/normal user setup of Linux and the likes. If they really cared about security they'd properly split off security updates again and make them quicker and easier to install while allowing people to put off feature updates until required/they felt like it.

Much of your talk about "theoretical" stuff doesn't actually work so its daft of MS to push it - its a nice idea that breaking the system to fix it by forcing hardware/software manufacturers to up their game in terms of driver releases, etc. but time and time again its been proved that approach does not work and even then its almost impossible not to have the odd unintended bug, etc. get through.

I'll refer back to what happened on one of my systems after a recent update:

3qodyKH.png

I dunno how it even managed to get that mixed up - the entry on the left says Overview where it should say battery - the percent left and hours have got mixed up, there are sliders where a status should be and text saying slider connected to a checkbox where a slider should be, etc. - it is basically the Ralph Wiggum of OSes when you peel back the layers - looks OK at first but when you take a closer look you realise its actually pretty badly broken inside.

There are many good ideas behind Windows 10 but the execution and implementation is just plain poor and should be seen for such - trying to defend the heap of **** that Windows 10 largely is doesn't do anything towards getting it improved and actually good in the future.

The state of some of the recent drivers is kind of what has spawned this discussion :s

No, you read me wrong. I have been using Win 10 for almost over an year. Going back to Win 7 is NOT an option for me. Question for me is not wether Win 7 or Win 10 is best. Question for me is what nvidia driver is best for my current system, i.e. Win 10.

Your what-Windows-system-is-best-question, you shall take to another thread.

Kind of the point of my point - even if that specific driver is OK the state of nVidia drivers lately has been kind of hit and miss and the next one published might be problematic again even if that specific one is OK - which is kind of relevant with the way Windows 10 works. Whether people use 10 or not is their choice - doesn't bother me personally what people use but those holding up 10 as some kind of improvement over 7 in many ways does.

Wow calm down mate, it’s totally on topic, and it’s 1 page in what 403...

No issues with Win 10 here since release...But it would be nice to see conversation about the latest driver release and not windows 7.
