**THE NVIDIA DRIVERS THREAD**

then I discovered AMD has its image sharpening on by default
Actually it's not on by default, unless you pick a specific pre-set (1 out of 3) when launching Radeon Software after driver install. If you skip the pre-sets completely, it's not on by default either. :)

I must have applied it accidentally on previous driver installs then, I was shocked at how bad stuff looked without it on though and thought I had made a big mistake going Nvidia.

I await 4K8K's scientific paper showing us how the 6800XT has much better image quality over a 3080 :D

The recent HUB video shows the 6800 being better than the 3070 IMO. For it to be the better long term investment once it retails for 529 or its realistic MSRP.

I have just gone from AMD to Nvidia (3080) and at first was disappointed how soft/blurry games looked particularly games with AA on max like COD MW and Cold War then I discovered AMD has its image sharpening on by default and Nvidia does not. Things look as good as before now apart from a few glitchy textures here and there but I think thats down to COD MW. I find it best to turn it on via an on game basis via the overlay option when you press ALT + Z

Radeon Image Sharpening is not on by default but the default Radeon's texture clarity is higher, thus the default Radeon image looks sharper and rendered more correctly.
Radeon Image Sharpening is nice in Microsoft Edge, while in games I turn it off because the default is nice enough.

For Nvidia, I must test the different options for its image sharpening, maybe the slider going to the right most position is too much overshapening.
I started Counter Strike Source on the RTX 3080 with maxed out image sharpening, and then entered the control panel back to switch it off completely.

  • [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti]: The desktop screen may flicker. [3200599]
  • [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti]: The system may freeze with the screen displaying as solid color. [3203038]
  • [HDR]: With HDR enabled, black levels are incorrect, notably on LG OLED TVs. [200682795/ 3201305]
  • [Notebook][Lenovo Y740]: The notebook displays corruption after waking from sleep. [3178279]

Installed and working great, but wish they would hurry up with resize bar support :)

Definitely, agree! This year should see some improvements now the hardware is maturing, hoping the announcement on the 12th is decent news and not some babble about laptops and devices I dont use.

Noticing on the 3070 I'm getting driver crashes when watching YouTube videos, on both Edge and Firefox. It doesn't happen all the time though, and it does recover after a few seconds so no full BSOD happening. I do see YouTube is listed in the known issues with the stuttered scrolling so no idea if it's related to that. My 1080 Ti was fine however, so will keep an eye out on future driver releases to see if it fixes it.

That's interesting. I've had a couple during web browsing too of late. Screen freezes, a brief black screen and then it recovers. Opening the Event Viewer notes it was nvlddmkm that crashed and recovered. I figured perhaps my curve overclock was slightly unstable, but I didn't see how as I didn't touch any of the lower points at all and it's been rigorously tested in games.

I think your CP review with a little polishing would be better than any paper some of the regular trolls could produce! Would like to read the papers of some of their attempts mind you, and put them through the copy+paste plagiarism mill to identify genuine work too! :p

That's pretty much the same thing I noticed when it crashes, black screen then recovers. Same message in event viewer too. My card is pretty much stock and I have gsync disabled in case that could be a possible cause. It doesn't happen too often though (only happened twice since I installed the card since Friday morning) so I have not yet tried an older driver to see if that's any better.

EDIT: On the driver changelog thread on Reddit, others have noticed it too. Seems the latest one has reduced the amount of times it happens so best to stick with these ones.

EDIT: I just loaded up Davinci Resolve and I'm having major issues, it crashes a lot. Looking at the Blackmagic forums it seems to affect all 3000 series cards. I'm only using this for hobby work so it's not too urgent but I'm curious if it's related to the video crashing bug, since it crashes when I'm playing stuff the timeline.
