**THE NVIDIA DRIVERS THREAD**

So, say one gets latest studio drivers. Do you still need the nvapp to go with it? Can it be used without nvapp? Or is nvapp now essentially the control panel that has been retired?

Yes I am aware if you install driver without extracting and removing things you don't want or using NVCleanstall it just installs everything in there including nvapp.

Seems no getting away from nvapp if you don't want it, unless you get control panel from ms app store which is in maintenance mode and probably will be discontinued at some point.

When you install any nv driver you can choose custom which then allows you to install nvapp, physx etc or just the bare driver.

App is not needed to do anything even though it replaces old CPL, you can do all of the necessary tweaks in profile inspector revamped which has the label profiles sorted better than the standard profile inspector:

I use both, but app is mostly used just to update the driver.

All frame capping is done in RTSS which uses the Reflex backend anyway which is driver level so no additional latency involved.

@mrk Regarding RTSS.....

in the settings/ "enable framerate limiter" dropdown what do you have selected? I've always just had "async" which I think is the default, but I've only just seen there is "Nvidia Reflex" as an option now too. This is news to me, how long has this been there!? You seem pretty clued up on the whole latency thing which is not something I've ever been that fussed about as I mostly use a controller, but is this reflex setting the option you'd recommend to use then vs async?

Auto is the Nvidia whitelist and Enable overrides it so even if the games isn't on the whitelist you can force it.
Great, thanks for the info!

Does Inspector Revamped allow the use of Shadowplay recording (if it's still called that) at all? I'd be interested in trying it if so (I could always use both side by side of it doesn't).

That dropdown has been there for a long time, mine (and most people using RTSS I suppose) will/should have it set to Reflex if you use an RTX card as it uses driver level capping for fps which means no additional frame latency. Async adds a single frame of latency which is around 8-9ms from all the info I have managed to gather in recent times.

I think the universal mod DLSS Enabler (even if you don't use the optiscaler parts of it like MFG injection) is very useful as it has a really good overlay for stats which neither RTSS nor Nvidia App overlay have in this specific way to break down how your system is performing with or without capping.

I did a quick comparison and had Gemini (for whatever it is worth lol) compare them both to outline what the Reflex/RTSS stats show between capped vs uncapped in 007 First Light considering it's currently a new game with an otherwise efficient engine.

Capped:

Uncapped:

The gist here is that capping to a much lower fps that's still smooth and fast gives a lower overall input/system latency than running at max possible fps.

This will also vary between game engines, unreal engine 5 is notoriously bad with CPU optimisation and under the exact same capping/uncapping I see the 4090 hover around 89% in STALKER 2 which indicates engine-level CPU bottleneck, whereas 007's engine is way more optimised as are others like Cyberpunk etc. So some playing around on a per game basis is needed to find the sweet spot. Generally speaking for me that appears to be 80fps capped or 100fps capped depending on the game.

Wow, top answer bud. Time for me to do some more messing and testing rather than actually playing games!

Well, that's what GPU's are for, after all.
HeHa.
Talking about messing and testing - I've just fitted a Wireview Pro 2 Wired version to my 5090FE today. What an amazing piece of kit, can thoroughly recommend. German engineering at its best and a nerd's absolute delight it is (and piece of mind for the family heirloom....)

I've downloaded NVI revamped instead of the standard one I was using. I assume Ray Reconstruction is F - Transformer 2?

Aye, "F - Transformer 2" in NVPI-R in the RR section.

Thing is, to force on a preset globally in NVPI-R I think think you have to have the necessary files in the Nvidia backend folders on your C drive/Program Data, which is done by updating the Nvidia app to the latest beta version. I could be wrong on this but that's my current understanding anyway. Are you one of those that won't use the Nvidia app? Otherwise you'd have to do the Nvidia folder manually and place the necessary DLL files manually in each game folder, and force on on a per game profile, not globally.

@Neil79 New drivers any good or stick to the previous ones?

Thanks!  ( I use NVPI-R now, with DLSS Swapper for the latest per game DLL's )

No issues here with these drivers, not had any issues for awhile with Nvidia.

I tend to just use NVCleaninstall and take out the bloat ( no nvapp )

So you have to use two things instead of one?
