**The OcUK Benchmarks thread!**

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...-radeon-frame-latencies-in-series-of-updates/

So a specific portion of AMD's driver code needs some additional attention in order to perform optimally on the year-old GCN architecture—and AMD has accelerated an overhaul of it after discovering that the new revision can alleviate frame latency issues. Wow.

Although we're not happy about the situation facing current Radeon owners, we're gratified to see that AMD has taken notice of the problems and is working to resolve them. We're also thrilled by the possibility that our latency-focused game testing may have helped nudge one of the major GPU makers into making changes that could result in improved gameplay fluidity for PC gamers going forward. Stay tuned to TR for additional updates on this situation as they become available.

I'm going to be running some frame time benchmarks to post later today myself. :)

Frame Times - Sleeping Dogs - 1440p

I use a light overclock of 1125/1563. I played a short driving mission in the game which involved driving from one city to another, it took just over two minutes each time and was repeatable. I use this for consistency. I ran it twice, once with vysnc off and once with it on. Here are my results.

After looking at TechReports article on frame times on sleeping dogs i copied their game settings and 7950 clock settings to do a comparison on my 7970. - http://techreport.com/review/23981/radeon-hd-7950-vs-geforce-gtx-660-ti-revisited/5

Settings Used

These were my results

I believe that TechReport should not have been using EXTREME SSAA on such cards for a start. Extreme is designed for Multi GPU. It did not feel smooth playing it on Extreme.

Using the same settings but turning SSAA down to HIGH instead of EXTREME gave me these results.

That is a huge difference and it felt oh so smooth, smoother than my 7970 overclocked experience at 1440p and that felt very smooth to me.

.

Interesting you say that, as it seems to be confirmed that poor memory management in software has had an effect on frame latency. It would be nice to see this addressed as they say they will, because then we might see extreme SSAA as a viable option in this and other games.

I remember reading a comment from AMD stating that extreme AA in sleeping dogs was only for multi gpu setups. I used to run it on my 7970 when i was at 1080p, but i had to run a meaty overclock to get it smooth enough to play. Comparing that now to how i run it at 1440p, same settings but SSAA on high instead its much much smoother.

Look at my SSAA high results though using TR settings. Look at how low those frame times are. You can bet your bottom dollar the 660 would be no where near those low frame times at that setting. Cherry picked. :)

Frame times are the new black, at the moment any way. :D

Hitman @ 1440p - Recorded using the built in game benchmark for consistency

Vsync on and then off 7970 @1125/1563

EDIT

If only fraps would allow afterburner to limit fps 1-2fps below vsync i think id see even smoother fps, sadly i cannot find a way around this at the moment. No fps limiting possible while using fraps to record frame times.

That looks stuttery Matt. Is it?

Done a bit of frametime checking of Skyrim @1440p myself, with an HD7970. Vanilla game, 4xMSAA, 16xAF, max settings.

Looks fine to me, except those big spikes which were real I felt them while the bench was running and knew they would show in the graph. Very odd as I've not had that before in Skyrim, but this is a fresh install on Win8 so I'll have to look into that. I don't know how TR have come up with their graphs though, or what might be different in their test system. I can't believe that the 7950 could be that much worse than a 7970 in terms of smoothness.

I did some frametime checks back when I had the 5850 xfire set up and was getting noticeable stuttering in DX:HR, and that looks very different.

I thought i would add to the frametimes.

Far Cry 3 - Medium Presets. Full size image here

Both done with a single 7970@1125/1575 and a 3770k @4.6Ghz.

The game on Ultra is neigh on unplayable due to the stuttering, this graph shows some pretty decent spikes, although the Medium graph looks stuttery - on closer inspection the spikes are only a tiny 32ms tops :)

Having a second card would only exacerbate this, but due to being incredibly lazy i cba to enable CF :D

CF 7970@1125/1575.
Ultra Presets + 8xMSAA. Subjectively a horrendous stutter fest, combination of low framerate and spikes in gameplay = ouch my eyes.

Blimey Tone your results are a lot worse than mine. Are you on windows 7?

Even though mine were better i could feel some hitching at parts, but its a lot better since UBI released that last patch anyway. I matched Tone's clocks of 1125/1575, windows 8.

Yeah Windows 7.
Any new patches Steam would update automatically? Hope so, cant remember what drivers i'm running though. I think Beta8s as they're more stable for BF3.

I'll install the latest later and try again, hopefully they bring down the frame times, the game looks good on Ultra but unplayable hence why i play on Medium :D

Part 1 of a CF 7970 vs CF 7950 clock for clock comparison. Just waiting on Rusty :D

2x7970 @1100/1500
3770k @4.6Ghz
13.3 beta3
All games with maximum possible IQ and at 1080p.
1440p will be added tomorrow if i get time, cba to grab the screen now getting a tad too late :D

I'm too lazy to put into graph form, so you're left with pictures.
Games used:

Bioshock Infinite
Dirt Showdown
Hitman
Metro2033
Sleeping Dogs
Tomb Raider
3D11
Valley
