!!!! The OCUK Martial Arts Thread !!!!

Been to taekwondo again tonight have handed in our forms for our licence. Getting really into it now which is good and have also gained some extra confidence.
Been doing a bit of sparring, pad work and a few blocks/kicks/punches and its coming together well. :)

I went to the british nationals for the jitsu foundation last week end! was great fun. i am a complete novice and was learning all sort of stuff, throws that the green belts need for grading, did feel like it was a bit advanced for me at times but i had an absolute ball.

did anyone else go?

I have friend who is a purple belt in the the TJF and she is always going on about how good their opens are. Sounds enjoyable! Glad you liked it :)

Karate

Does anybodoy here do shotokan karate?I'm a 4th kyu.I'd recommend it to anyone if you're wanting to start a martial art.Always go for traditional though.Freestyle gets abit messy and uncertain.Plus its a great way to get in shape.Im being serious...I lost 3 stone through it LOL.

Also what is JuJitSu like?I aint tried it.

Im 14 years of age, and I do Tae-Kwon-Do, im 1st degree blackbelt, going for second degree in 2 months...

UkGT - United Kingdom Global Taekwondo

Your the same as me then :)

originally BUTF but had to change to UKGT because my current club closed down. I am only affliated to UKGT, I do more with the ITF directly. I will probably change back to BUTF at some point hopefully.
Thats a very young age to gain a black belt (10 years old). Once you both get to 16 you will probably be graded again to move to adult level.

Funnily enough I have just started training in Shotokan. I originally trained in a Wado Ryu based style and then a little bit of kickboxing but I last trained 10 years ago. I am starting from scratch again with a nice new crisp gi and a white belt! LOL.

I searched around locally for karate clubs and there are all sorts of wierd and wonderful styles about these days but I like the good old fashioned way of doing things and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Shotokan is a very strong style that has lasted and it suits me very well. :)

what club are you at? and what federation is it? glad your enjoying it.

Another convert to add to the ranks :)

Not really a club or such. I do it down my local leisure centre.
Its the ITF federation and have just got my suit last week. I am really enjoying it but finding patterns quite difficult. I prefer the sparring although I know I have to be able to do the patterns so I can go up a belt.

Luckily my instructor has just passed a graduation so he grade us which will save having to go up infront of loads of people! :)

Nice, can you not get the ITF dvd and learn patterns off them

I'm with Taekwon-Do ITF

After passing my black belt exam with Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha 9th DAN (formally 8th dan before the founder died)

The exam was hell, sparring against 3 black belts, power test breaking bricks with hands and feet. Flying kicks and having to break 3x plastic blocks and breeze blocks 9-12 ft in the air. Intensive pattern showing (every move has to be really accurate to the micrometer) and offical intensive questioning by other instructors on theory.

After I passed with pain all over, sweat, blood on hands and feet and feeling really sore. However I started teaching for a year every tuesday and thursday a small group but I gave it all up as I felt not like teaching anymore.

I seriously recommend International TaeKwon-Do but it's not for the faint hearted. (Depending on instructor, he/she can make lessons really tough)

yeah you will not go wrong with the strength of shotokan, its very no thrills and direct. Bet your freeked out about the thought of having a white belt again? you'll get in to quickly, where abouts are you trainning?

I did shotokan karate for a number of years when I was younger. I have just booked myself into a shobu aikido class startin thurs, I really like the ideas of aikido, think they will suit me then, altho it does seem more on the floppy wristed side of things :p

Will let you know how it goes :)

Just out of interest, how many of you practise your patterns/katas/etc regularly? I have never been one for practising them that much outside of training sessions, but have had a change of heart now that I have changed instructors and the new guy has pointed out a number of flaws in mine.
