The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

It’s bloody ridiculous what’s going on with Springbank at the moment with everybody jumping on the bandwagon. It wasn’t that long ago you could just walk into a retailer and pick up whatever you wanted. Just before COVID I bought two bottles (boxed!) of 15yo off the shelf just in case it got a bit scarce - seems like a wise decision in hindsight!

Case in point - 400 quid on secondary market for a 10yo. RRP was £90

I suppose the local barley series has been going for well more than that (up to 700) for a long time but I had that down as some sort of anomaly.

I enjoyed my springbank 10 very much, it was good for the price (50 at retail) but not mind-blowing, and I won't chase anything else more expensive from them.

I'm a big fan and have enjoyed it for quite a few years now and am fortunate enough to be a member of the "Springbank Society" which is ran by Springbank and gives us advance notice of such bottlings. Unfortunately membership has been closed for a good while now as it is well overscribed.

I had my name down for a bottle of the PX release from my usual supplier, but it went to ballot (as it usually does) and I missed out. The "Society" will be doing its own ballot for its members so I may get lucky with one, but it's luck of the draw. I've had several bottles this way and have three of the local barley series and some very limited society bottlings that you'll see pop up on the auction sites. The trouble is, I'll never drink them because of this apparent value and this annoys me because I said to myself that I'd never get into this collecting malarkey.

back from Dumfries and galloway..I had an arran 10 for the week and its a very pleasant easy drinking drop

went to TB Watson as they have a good range of things and have come home with this, claxtons are an indie from the dumfries area

single cask..a sherry butt, cant say what it tastes like yet as its going to be opened after christmas dinner!

Something about that bottle just looks fun and clouty; the age, the sherry butt, the ABV and then the bottle design itself.
Enjoy!

it's a lovely art-deco design isn't it? I want it on that basis alone...
Spot on. It looks like it'll taste decadent!

It's purely successful marketing and design, but I've not seen a bottle in ages that's made me practically salivate without any knowledge of the contents.

Hopefully for FTM the style suits the substance!

I wish Aldi started doing decent limited run whiskeys at Christmas again. A number of years ago I picked up their 28 year old Glen Marnoch, it was something like £40, but the flavour profile was lightyears beyond what that price point normally offers.

I check every year for something good but am always disappointed.

I feel like to drink that you need to be dressed like it's the 1920's and any ladies in the room should be smoking cigarettes using cigarette holders

28 yo for £40 is unbelievably good value. Lidl had a 19yo Islay one in for 40 quid a couple of weeks ago, which has got to be worth a punt.

Can anyone spec me a whisky for me and my dad, we normally drink bourbon occasionally, but my dad does like scotch whisky, although I was going to get a Japanese whisky Yoichi single malt, but I’m not sure if the price is a little inflated due to it being Japanese.

As it’s a special purchase for Christmas my budget is around £70.

What’s something easily available and good at around my budget?

Like something smooth and not too peaty/smokey.

Thanks

I've really enjoyed cask strength Benromach. For that money it's very good : https://www.benromach.com/shop/uk
