The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Hi Vic if you don't mind me asking, when is the birthday ? Reason being I'm hoping to make a trip up to Bushmills within next couple of weeks and I can't recommend enough the 12 year old single malt they sell there (and Only there), I wouldnt mind posting it over.

Nuts to that. Get yourself a bottle of the distillery-only rum finish. I think it's a 16 year old. Fantastic dram.

Tonight's tasting is Cardhu 12yo. I'm familiar with the name but have never tried it before. I was placing an online groceries order with Sainsbury's and spotted this at £20 (reduced from £33.99) and thought it was an ideal opporchancity to give it a try.

Cardhu 12yo - Speyside malt 40% (with water).
Nose: Sweet. Fruity. Touch of citrus. Hint of vanilla. 20
Taste: Pear drops. Slightly spicy. Slightly oaky. Floral. 20
Finish: Shortish. Dry on the tongue, sweet on the gums. Quite pleasant. 19
Balance: Nice fruity taste with a pleasant finish. If the finish was a bit longer, I'd score it more highly. 20
Overall 79.

Not a bad whisky at all. Would easily be worth the full £34. A bargain at £20. If you like whisky, get yourself down to Sainsbury's and get a bottle or two while it's still on offer - that's an order :p

waitrose have a shed loads of whisky on 20% reduction at the moment. I got a bottle of 12yr knockando for ~£22.

I have no idea how well w'rose compare to shopping online, but it does allow you to conceal the cost of your whisky habit within the overall grocery bill!

wouldn't be surprised if it was a decent whiskey, selling a couple of casks at a loss isn't a bad way to get lots of press and allot of people into the stores. There is no way they bought it at £300 a bottle remember, it will have been more like ~£100 max to buy the casks and bottle it up - £150k is a very cheap for the coverage it'll get!

Whilst looking around for Christmas gifts I've stumbled upon one that I think I'll have to treat myself to. :(

It would go well in the collection* next to the 25yr old. Wallet has evolved a disapproving face though, purely to say this is a bad idea... :D

*Collection of whisky is being kept alive by Jura and dregs of 18yr Glenfiddich... Need more "normal" bottles added to top up.

I'm jealous. Rosebank made lovely whisky. Such a shame they had to close the distillery :(

I've had the 20yo Laing bottling and that was superb.

Hey peeps,

Always seen this thread and never thought to pop in, anyone recommend a good 20-30quid bottle I can sip over the Xmas period? Seen a lot on HukDeals and in the supermarkets but haven't really looked online etc

Usually I'm a Bourbon drinker but thought I should grow a pair.

Was given a bottle by my grandad to start off my collection couple of years back Not opened or tried it

I was given some Glenfiddich 12 YO by some ex colleagues of mine yesterday. Not bad. However, I just bought some Laphroaig Quarter Barrel and am loving it. Not quite as smooth as St Andrews Chapter 11, but still very, very tasty stuff. Smokier than the chapter 11 and good for it.

Hmm, anyone have any recommendations to take the kick out of the whiskies?

I quite like the flavour in ones I've tried so far, but the pure kick is quite hard to cope with some times!

I tried a Talisker, which wasn't actually too bad, but my Jura Origins (10YO), still manages to give a bit of a kick...

Welcome to the world of single malt whiskies :) Your Glenmorangie is a decent malt. I'm not normally a big fan of Glenmorangie but the 18yo is a decent expression.

Here are a few I would recommend:

Quite a list I know. Just have a look and read some tasting notes and see what tickles your fancy.

Put a bit of water in it - not too much, just enough to take the kick off it and help release the flavour. Don't listen to the old myth that single malts should be drunk neat. Pretty much every expert/connoisseur will tell you that a small amount of water will help release the flavour of the whisky and enhance the enjoyment.
Also, when tasting, breathe in the aroma through the nose when you lift the glass to your lips. A large part of tasting anything is the smell and breathing in the aroma whilst sipping will help you to enjoy the full experience.

I'm not a great fan of the Glenfiddich, but for that price I'd say go for it.

Got a bottle of Jura Superstition from my pal for my Birthday. I'm not entirely sure on it yet. I'm not that found of the sweetness in it.
Got another bottle from my old man, in a square bottle. My friend (from Tomintoul, ergo he know's whisky I guess) described it as "A very old man whisky" but can't for the life of me remember what it is. Had to send the bottle away with my father so doubt I'll be able to taste it for a while. Any ideas what it could be Stan?
