The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Can anyone recommend a good Glenmorangie alternative? I'm not sick of it but just want to try something else, I love the sweet flavours of it but for example don't like Glenfiddich which for me just has a taste of oak and has little fruity smell.

My recommendation would be this - one of the best whisky's I've ever tasted and quite reasonably priced too.

Also - if you also want to push the boat out a bit there is this option as well.

I'll never forget the look on my OH's face when I told her how much I'd just spent on one bottle of whisky :p

A bottle of Glenlivet would probably be a good option. The 18 year old was reduced to £32 last time I was in Tescos's but even the 12 year old has nearly the same flavour, just nowhere near as smooth.

My whisky supply is dangerously low, and I need some help choosing what to get next from some of the experts here.

My budget is £30ish a bottle.

Of the ones I've tried, the 2 favourites are Highland Park 12 year old, and Johnnie Walker Green. Glenfiddich is ok, but not a fan of Jura. I don't like anything that is too peaty.

Before I stick with what I know, does anyone have any reccomendations?

Balvenie Doublewood is £25 in ASDA atm. A cracking price, usually retails for £32-36. It's a nice smooth whisky but isn't sweet. It's easily my favourite whisky, and at £25 it is a no brainer.

Might be a tad late now, but here's a few suggestions:

  • Monkey Shoulder
  • Old Pulteney 12yo
  • Balblair 1997
  • Aberlour 10yo/12yo
  • Singleton of Dufftown 12yo
  • Glen Elgin 12yo
  • Ancnoc 12yo
  • Tomatin 12yo
  • Glenfarclas 10yo

Obviously, if you're willing to stretch your budget by £5 or so, you open yourself up to the likes of Aberlour Abun'adh, Arran 12yo, Balvenie Signature 12yo, Macallan 12yo, and some Benriach's range of finishes (Dark Rum and Madeira are particularly good).

And don't be afraid to try some independent bottlings. Signatory Series, Connoisseur's Choice, Berry Bros. and Bladnoch do some excellent bottlings.

My current faveourite is between Longrow and Springbank.

Two exceptional drinks, i find them a bit like Lagavulin bit feel a bit more oily in the mouth and a tad smoother.

is Monkey Shoulder REALLY better than Jura?

Depends on my mood but it's not bad at all.

It's an all malt blend of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. Reminds me of Glenfiddich 15 yo. So if you prefer that sort of whisky to the stuff that comes from Jura distillery - yes.

In fact, given the relative prices I'd take a bottle of Monkey Shoulder over Glenfiddich 12yo maybe even 15 yo.

I like variety though so I'd rather have all of the above.

Waitrose have some good deals on, Aberlour A'Bunadh £25.00, Lagavulin 12 CS £50.00, Lagavulin DE £33.00! And a few others, some of the deals maybe local but it's worth a look. They even had Redbreast 12 discontinued @ £20 but you will be lucky if you find that, it now retails @ £40

Out of interest from the folk that have quite expensive whisky how long would you say it lasts before the taste is affected providing its kept out of sunlight.

My grandma recently passed away and i was thinking of using some of my inheritance to buy a good bottle of whisky (my usual bottles are around £30-£50) obviously this would be kept and not drank regularly.

I know booze tends to lose flavour when the bottle starts to get emptier but a rough estimate would be good

Cheers

Cant say i have ever noticed but a bottle rarely last more than 4 months, but i have about 8 or more open at the same time. Currently have 13 different bottles on the go, all kept in the cellar so constant temp and dark.

I found Glenmorangie a bit meh tbh, it's a Highland malt so try another Highland. I prefer Speyside's so Glenlivet and Singleton of Dufftown are my faves. Old Pulteney is nice too and is a Highland.

I've had bottles open for up to 2 years and they can go flat so to say, the emptier the bottle the faster it will deteriorate (or better in some cases).

If a whisky is really expensive or rare I will decant some in to smaller bottles at the time of opening.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned (still reading through the thread) - but Glengoyne 10 year old is probably my favourite budget whisky & I would recommend people new to whisky to give it a shot. (ha!)

Question for you whiskey lovers- my dad is a fan of Powers Irish whiskey and it's his birthday coming up. Thinking of getting him the Powers John's Lane 12 year old - has anyone tried it? What did you think? If it's rubbish does anyone have any other suggestions for whiskeys similar to Powers? (it's very peaty - and a bit harsh, I'm told, but I'm not a whiskey drinker :) )

Thanks in advance!
