The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

7 hangovers also!

Planning to do a distillery tour for the father in-laws 60th, I predict a lot of messiness. As he orders one with his Guinness not to sip, but to chin straight off then start on his pint. It's ok though, the water counteracts it /facepalm.

Woohoo me and the wife bought a lovely glass-fronted cabinet on Wednesday, so guess what I'll be putting in there! All my whiskies will have pride of place in 8 weeks time when it gets delivered. I'll stick them all in and take a picture to post up here :)

On a side note, I've hammered the Laphroaig Triple Wood. I have an Ardbeg Corryvreckan that will probably be up next, although I also got a lovely bottle of Lagavulin 16yr for Christmas that I should probably open. I absolutely love Islay whiskies!

If I wanted to get something from Speyside next, what would the connoisseur's of OcUK suggest?

lot of choice..and I mean A LOT when it comes to speyside

cant go wrong with a balvenie though..the double woods are ok but the single cask 15 year old are outstanding for their price

other safe bets from the larger producers, macallan (12 year old or better..not a fan of the 10) and craggenmore

if you want to try some of the smaller outputs Glendronach do fantastic sherried finishes and is excellent value, the 12 year old original is great and they only get better with age, 15 year old and 18 years are still very affordable, with a wide range of cask finishes as well (tawny port one always catches my eye but yet to try it)

Benriach as well..much under rated but excellent value means you get better aged whisky for the same price as lower aged from a bigger distillery ( I have the 16 year old claret cask finish at the moment and its amazing)

Look out for the Glendronach single cask releases some of these are outstanding and there is normally one in the £60 range but they tend only to be available for a day or two after release (unless you want the 1971/72's at £300), get one if you can. Over the last few years they have been released July/Aug and around November.

I started on single malts (glenmorangie and talisker were favourites), been up there to the distilleries many times, but for the past year or two I've found myself favouring the sweeter spirits in my cabinet... namely the bourbons Wild Turkey and it's cheaper equivalent "Fighting C*ck" - and no, that isn't some guy you regularly see out on a Friday night, it really is the name of an American spirit. :)

Anyway, you lot talking about the Islay's Ardbeg and Laphroaig have made wonder what all the fuss is about and want to taste them. Does anyone know anywhere you can get the miniatures with free shipping, or simply buy a small bottle in a regular high street shop? Obviously I wouldn't want to spend £30 on a 70cl it turned out I didn't like - I'm open minded, but not daft. :)

As a big Jack Daniel's fan, i picked up a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Silver Select in duty free on Tuesday.

Im looking forward to trying it tomorrow night

Its strange I've been a Bourbon fan since I could drink but I've been moving into stronger versions and now into Scottish Whisky of late.

I have bottles of Makers Mark, JD, JD Gentlemen, Single barrel and Silver select Single Barrel. I've even taken to experimenting with JD in grannie smiths (Currently maturing).

In regards to Whisky I have a bottle of Bruichladdich - Rocks, its not bad considering its technically not a single malt but Ardbeg has got a grip of me of late. I love its strong flavours, it just seems to over power your senses and makes them tingle for a long time after.

A friend has had me visiting The Scottish Whiskey Society and they have a fantastic range of small batch runs. The Vaults down in Leith isn't far from where I stay as well to boot so I can enjoy a afternoon with a nice walk home :)

Peaty, salty and smokey tastes have me drooling just now lol

Drunk to much whisky this weekend, done about half the bottle of JD Silver Select Single barrel, and 1/4 No7 :)

Anyone know the best place to pick up some Gentleman Jack?

As posted a while back I just started exploring whiskies. Tried a few Bushmills (Original, 10 year single malt & Black Bush.) and also Gentleman Jack (paid £25 in Tesco for above poster). Thought I'd try some Scotch but hadn't a clue where to start. Ordered these up and they arrived today so looking forward to trying them over the next few weeks, thought it was maybe better to do this than buy a bottle I won't like. Hopefully there'll be something in there I like. from what I've tried so far I'd buy a bottle Black Bush first. Oh and I know there's an odd one out in the picture. :)

Has anyone been on any whisky tasting trips around the UK before, any recommendations on where I can start looking for something like this?

Black bottle is one of the most interesting blends available..its only blended from islay malts and so is pretty damn good as blends go....better then Black label in my opinion

Being better than Black Label isn't necessarily high praise :p

Never tried Black Bottle. I didn't realise it was blended from Islay malts - I may need to give it a try.
