The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Tonight im looking forward to a few glasses of JD Silver Select, its been a while... im trying to to drink it to fast!

Just having a wee dram of Penderyn, got a bottle of 10 year Glengoyne from the distillery last week on a visit so have to finish the 'welsh' one before starting on my 'scotch' one.

After the brief mention of the dislike of whisky collectors by myself and Stan, I thought this was appropriately timed.

OcUK group buy?

The lots include two bottles of Macallan which were distilled in 1928 and are worth an estimated £10,000 each.

Mr Shiach said he was selling the bottles as they "were too valuable to drink and too rare to replace".

Other rare bottles up for sale at McTear's Auctioneers include a 1951 single malt, which is expected to fetch £3,000, and two rare bottles of 1946 Macallan.

Too valuable to drink? My bum.

Finally got around to taking a picture of my 'collection'. I'm a sucker for deals in supermarkets..

Mostly Scottish single malts, with a Double Black and some Woodford Reserve on the end.

I opened the Singleton 12yr last night, it was very nice and smooth but not a whole lot of flavour. I do tend to prefer the slightly more peaty whisky though like a Talisker or Ardbeg.

That sounds like a good deal considering the Macallan 50yr - 1928 is £30k here! http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/selection/macallan_1928_50_yo_whisky.aspx

The Cadenhead's bottle pictured is a single cask 17 year old Ardbeg but it's no better than the 10 year old so I'm slightly disappointed that I opened it, thankfully it wasn't expensive. I also understand the dislike of collectors but that doesn't stop me wishing I'd kept a couple of bottles of the proper distillery bottled 17 year old Ardbeg rather than drinking them.

Just bought an 18 year old Glen Marnoch from Aldi today for £19.99.

Smells alright, will give it a taste after tea later.

Also Johnny Walker Black label is £20 at ASDA to be a tad off topic.

Laphroaig, Talisker & Doublewood are all £25 at Tesco. Much better whiskies than Johnny Walker Black and easily worth the £5 difference.

Quoted for the truth and I don't particularly like peaty whiskies. I'm hoping the Mighty T has some decent Speyside whiskies on offer over the festive period as I've currently got £20.00 or so of club card vouchers to use up. :p

Get all over the Doublewood, I doubt it'll go lower than £25 and it's a great Speyside whisky. I had a bottle of Laphroaig in my trolley today, but I put it back. Can't really justify another bottle of whisky as I'm going to buy a £50 one at the end of the month.

Any views on the Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old for a starter? It's on offer at the moment for £20 and I'm sure I read somewhere it was a nice mild whiskey for a new palate.

edit:

The Doublewood, I had a quick try of this last Christmas and definatly though it was a future purchase but never got around to it. Would it serve me better than the Singleton, or is it a case of buying both to find out :p

I'm not a whisky drinker, on a rare occasion I'll have a JD & coke. But last night I tried the new JD Honey. OMG, this stuff is lovely. Had 5 of them neat.

Looking forward to going out tonight to have some more of them :p

Great deals on whisky in the shops at the moment, picked up 2 bottles of JD Honey and a another bottle for stock of Gentleman Jack :D

The Singleton is a good whisky (I have a bottle at home) and well worth a try. I'd say the Doublewood was the better whisky though.

I would say that, if you've already tried the Doublewood, you should give the Singleton a try - life would be very dull if we only drank one kind of whisky. If you can afford both, buy them both and compare. I'm sure you won't be disappointed by either :)

Started stocking up for Christmas, picked up (partially courtesy of my morrisons saving stamps!)

Balvenie Doublewood
Old Pulteney 12
Glenfarclas 105
Some mandatory BNJ

Also won a bottle of Jura (not sure which expression) yesterday via Twitter which was a nice surprise. Added to the stuff in the cupboard the wee collection is coming along nicely.

Couple of questions, one specifically for Ahleckz. Firstly, does anyone know about the discontinuing of Glenfarclas 105? I've seen it mentioned but failed to find anything concrete. Would be a real shame if it's true. Also do any supermarkets (Glasgow) stock Quarter Cask? I remember you used to get it on offer from time to time but now I only see the 10 sadly. Also Ahleckz are you going to the whisky festival tomorrow, imagined it might be your scene?
