The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Yea thats the problem its not so easy here.

Decided on the Glenmorangie 10 Year Old - The Original and Jura Origin for starters along with a couple of Glencairn whisky glasses. Aim to buy a bottle or 2 a month to start to figure out what I like.

I expect i will prefer these cold so are whisky stones worthwhile buying?

I hope you enjoy them. As for the whisky stones - I've never tried them but chilling drinks numbs the taste, that might make them easier to drink (same reason Magniers is best drunk over ice perhaps) but with whisky it also loses some of the more subtle flavours. Some people choose to add a touch of water to the whisky to bring out the flavours more, this is usually advisable for the stronger (cast strength) whiskies but some people just like water in any whisky. Again it's personal preference so you could try both with stones and without or with water and without, it is up to you how you want to drink whisky - there's an argument that if you've got to add/modify the taste so much to drink it that you're better off drinking something else, however it's up to you to decide how you like it as this is presumably for your enjoyment.

I recently finished my first bottle of whisky, Johnnie Walker Black Label, which I thoroughly enjoyed once I got to know it. Certainly my first time drinking whisky for pleasure rather than inebriation, and it did take my tender 25 year old taste buds some getting used to, but I think towards the middle of the bottle I started to develop some genuine appreciation.

Next I thought I'd try out a single malt, and so last week I bought a bottle of Aberlour 12yo Double Cask Matured.

Got it for what looks like was a very good price of £25. I've only had one measure so far (initial results positive), but as my whisky intrigue is on a firmly upward trajectory I might try and make a review in the days to come.

I also bought another bottle of Johnnie Black Label to have as a staple, I think they serve different occasions nicely. This has been decanted whereas the Aberlour stays in its elegant bottle

just opened this one recently

17 year old Mortlach, smells almost like a glass of sherry , but thankfully isn't overpowered by it when I comes to tasting.

That's a very imposing looking bottle and case, like it.

Can I ask how much it set you back? 17 years and non chill filtered, sounds like a heavy goer

was around 70 quid only 816 bottles as it was from an independant with probably only 1 or 2 casks

I tend to get all my whisky from here

https://www.thegreenwellystop.co.uk/whiskyshop/

he has excellent links with with several independant bottlers and the bigger obnes such as Gordon & Macphail so he has a wide range of more interesting stuff

plus I am in Oban twice a year and drive past him so can pop in and pick up a couple of bottles each time of something thats less widely available

something at the cheaper end of the market to eke out my more expensive drams!!

but for me at under 40 quid this as good a drop as many more expensive whisky, helps its a little known distillery so doesn't feature in many supermarket selections..very under rated and worth seeking out if you have never tried it

non chill filtered and a cheeky 48% as standard. bargain!

I'm very new to the world of whiskey but have found a few I like (helps having a mate with an extensive collection and an ability to select varying tastes).

I can't stand the Scottish stuff. Just tastes awful. Quite like Irish. But Japan is an easy first place so far having tried about 10 I think.
With that in mind, I ordered some Nikka Coffey Malt and it arrived today.

Cheers!

I used to live in Elgin so touring the distilleries with family when they visited is something I had to do. Admittedly the 25yr old versions were better than the others.
Other than that, I couldn't tell you. Even picked them out in a blind taste test (and proceeded to get quite tipsy).

Bunnahabhain and Aberlour I tried it last week. The Hibiki and Taketsuru were great. The Midleton is superb. The pic shows how I ranked them taste wise.

Tried Old Pulteney too (2 types, can't remember which though).

Went to The Irish Whiskey Museum in Dublin last year. We tried 4 types. The only one I didn't like was Teeling. Apparently this is more a scotch style.

Was in the Supermache at the weekend stocking up on french wine and beer - accidentally slipped a bottle of Bowmore Legend in the cart :) I know it's a bit middle of the road but for the odd dram it's acceptable :)

Just ordered a bottle of Pikesville 6 Year Old 110 Proof Straight Rye should hopefully have it for the weekend.

Got good recommendations last year but MoM sold out within the day so I couldn't order a bottle.

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me......

All very nice in their own way, sampled them all over the weekend with a friend.
Wasn't expecting the Midleton, missus got carried away. Will be comparing it to the 2014 next week.

Just picked up Ben Bracken 22yo Islay Single malt for £45 from Lidl. It got the Winner - World Whisky Awards Best Islay over 21 year old - which is impressive until you see that there are no Gold or Silver entries in that category. Either the competion was spectacularly bad - or it was the only entry in the category...

Scratch that. It got winner - Best Islay overall too. Meaning it beat Ardbeg 10, Corryvreckan, Ugadail and Lagavulin 16 in panel based blind taste test.

I've not tried it yet but a colleague has - he reckons it's probably a Bowmore and certainly worth the money. Others seem to think a Laphroaig.
