The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Well just opened up a Laphroaig Quarter Cask, given to me by my parents for Christmas.

I'm not gong to publish the tasting notes yet. Will have to taste against a few drams I'm very familiar with and think about the score (it's an excuse to get hold of some lagavulin 16 anyway...). Safe to say I'm going to be scoring it very high - 95 minimum.

At less than £24, it's got to go on my highly recommended list.

Great isn't it?! :)

I thought I'd try something a bit different, so I bought a bottle of monkey shoulder. It's really quite nice, also bought a bought a bottle of Appleton rum, will be my main drink tonight.

Well bought myself a bottle of Laphroaig 10yo this weekend, and after the 1st couple of mouthfulls I was booting up my PC with the firm intention of telling off everyone in this thread that recommended it. To start with it just tasted like Highland Park 12yo which is complete ****

However after a couple more and thinking about what I could taste it really grew on me. It's not a subtle drink like a Balevennie 12yo 'Doublewood' but the flavours are excellent. Strong peat smoke(while sat there with a dram my g/f said it smells like I've started smoking), salty with a subtle but unmistakeable sweet finish. A real grower and a brand that I can see myself trying different ones.

After watching Chuck recently I have decided I would like to try out some whiskey. My only real experience is some Bells which I mixed with beer/red wine/vodka to make a knockout punch for my ex girlfriend.

Anyway going back to the Chuck one he was drinking Johnny Walker Black. So I did a bit of research and the website is mightily impressive. The only one mentioned in here so far is JW Red. So what do you all think of it? JW Black and Green are both on offer in Waitrose at the moment, reckon I should pick up a bottle and see what they are like? Good place to start Whiskey?

Guys for a starter whisky would you recommend Jura 10yo? Ive tasted a proper Islay and that was a little too smokey for me, Id like undertones if possible.

If that Islay was Laphroaig then Bowmore Legend would be a lot softer and certainly more balanced in terms of peat/smoke. Ardbeg is brutally intense peat with smoke so between the three of them you have the scale..

just cracked open my Royal Lochnagar Distillers edition, double wooded, in oak then in a muscat cask

its smooth and smells like christmas pudding with anice sweet finish...its bloody lovely!

Bump... Acquired a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old, any opinions?

Bumped again for a very delayed reply - Laphroaig isn't one I'd personally choose as it's taste is far too peaty for me. Each to their own though, hope you enjoy it :)

Also, this just arrived today:

Not tried it yet but I'll report back here once it's sampled :D

Okay, first of all I have to admit that it has been a good while since I have had a bottle of my particular preferred tipple, the reason being that at over £60 a bottle, its not an everyday drink (even less so, the £400 a bottle "last cask" version).

The Dallas Dhu distillery ceased production in 1983, and ever since, they've been bottling from their vast stocks, this means that every year, the number of potential bottles becomes more limited. It is also now a museum, and if anyone is in the area of it, I thoroughly recommend the tour as about the only distillery tour that allows you to stick your head inside the stills. It allows a persective that you just can't get in an operational distillery.

Aromawise, it is slightly spicy and floral, with a cedar edge, the taste being similar with a kick and dry smoke backdraft.

Gordon & Macphail usually have miniatures avaliable for the 'taster' though I don't believe these portray the whisky fairly.
