The OCZ Vertex 3 Thread

You only get the best performance if you put the U3S6 in the lowest 16x slot, if you put him in the first you won't get similar performance.

Is the other slot, where you had bad performance, a 1xPCIE slot because it's a 4xPCIE board the U3S6?

I don't know i have a HP XW4600 workstation with these specs:

Chipset: Intel X38 Express North Bridge/ICH9R South Bridge
Processor Socket: Single LGA775

I am not that technical is there a specific name for my motherboard?

Probably not - it's likely a custom HP job.

Hopefully my vertex3 will arrive today, cancelled the order from another shop and bought from here.

Anyway it's the 120gb version, is it worth partitioning the drive, say 40 /80 with the 40 being for the OS and 80 for any programs / games I want on or not?

Also can anyone point be to the correct list of all the things I need to do to get the drive installed.

regards,

Matt

I'd leave the SSD as 1 partition and put your OS and essential stuff on it.. office etc ,most played games(online).... the rest install to a 2nd hdd

Have not see it posted elsewhere but the Vertex 3 Max IOPS were announced a few days ago lifting the max IOPS to 75K.......

OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today unveiled a new addition to the highly-awarded Vertex 3 SATA III Series. The Vertex 3 Max IOPS edition drives extend the company's industry-leading Vertex 3 SSD product line to support users that require greater transactional throughput.

"Following the successful launch of our Vertex 3 SATA III 6Gbps solid state drives we are pleased to introduce the new Max IOPS edition," said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology Group. "Vertex 3 Max IOPS drives increase random write performance, and are the ideal storage solution for applications that require high aggregate workloads and increased IO throughput."

The Vertex 3 Max IOPS edition combines the cutting-edge SandForce® SF-2200 SSD processor with premium NAND flash components to deliver exceptional 4KB random write performance with up to 75,000 IOPS. Furthermore, these drives can significantly improve multimedia entertainment and management, and the overall computing experience compared to both traditional mechanical hard drives and competing SSDs.

Vertex 3 Max IOPS will be available in capacities of 120GB and 240GB, and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive's lifespan. All Vertex 3 Series drives come backed with a 3 year warranty to ensure customer satisfaction.

I haven't got SATA 3 on my motherboard.

If I bought this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-000-AS&groupid=701&catid=49&subcat=424

Would I get the same performance as a motherboard with SATA 3 give or take?

Don't fancy upgrading the system yet.

Check back over the thread few pople have the add on card and it has increased speeds but not to full 6gbs

No it is also an PCIe 16x slot, the manual from the U36S also states "Insert ASUS U3S6 to this PCIe slot to get maximum bandwidth" and then they post a picture of the lowest 16x slot.

Thinking about getting one of these as I'm about to build a new system. Are the Vertex 3s pretty much the quickest/best SSD around at the moment? I've never had a SSD before, anything in particular I should get/avoid getting in my new build if I get a Vertex 3?

You're bang on the money, Phunkey!

NickM - I'd say they were, yes :) If you're running Win7, there's not really much you need to do, as 7 takes care of it all for you.
