I love it. My god it's quick. I'm coming from a 2013 13" MBP and it blows its socks off. It's even faster than my HP Envy X360 that has a Ryzen 7 4700U.

It's great that you posted this comment. I was inbetween that very Envy x360 and the Air/Pro for a while. Then the fact that the battery was so much better and that it worked it seems on full tilt on battery was very alluring. Plus with the Air not having fans and keeping cool seemed incredible.

I'm so glad that now I went for the Air 512 and that I didn't miss out the Envy x360 ryzen 7 which I think is a very cool machine indeed!

unfortunately I am many years away from upgrading my 2019 MBP16, but I said it 30 years ago and finally it is coming to pass; Intel's x86 arch is just too damned inefficient and clumsy - RISC will win out in the long run! wow it's been a bloomin long run, but here we are.

You were right and not only that, the M1 emulation of x86 is ridiculously good! There's no way I could have entertained trying a Macbook again without it.

I must admit that seeing the speed of legacy x86 apps running on M1 under Rossetta2 simply blew my mind. How much of this performance is due to the ARM based arch and how much is simply a benefit of on-die memory etc. I guess only time will tell.

Very impressive first go from Apple here tho :) cannot wait to see what they will do next...

edit: I have been an Apple fan since 1986 and the Macintosh. No Fangurl - I love all techie stuff, it's just Apple has a habbit of doing stuff very well.

My main gripe about the M1 models has nothing really to do with Apple.

Google still haven't sorted out getting File Stream to work on these new laptops. I'm using Mountain Duck as an alternative, but it feels a little bit buggier than File Stream used to run natively.

It sounds like Google massively dropped the ball. They were given a heads up many many months ago about how Apple were changing the underlying features of Big Sur but Google don't seem to have done anything about it.

Google always seem to be extremely slow at adapting software and apps on Apple, it's a shame if you're invested in their ecosystem as it can be frustrating waiting for them to fix things.

Sold my gaming PC yesterday because I never played games on it (I've never been a gamer ) and I am awfully tempted to order a 8/8/16G/512 Air today.

My head says wait for the next Mx chip for the Air because the second generation is always the one to go for, but they may not update these things annually and I can't wait forever.

Rumours suggest Air will be refreshed in 2022, and gain the new design aesthetic of the incoming 14” and 16” MacBook Pro. There will be a 14” pro this year but my guess is it will be a tier above the current laptops and also won’t be here until Q3 earliest.

I really cant see apple selling a 13" and a 14" pro at the same time.

Thanks :) I think ~£1400 is probably as much I want (and need) to spend on a laptop which rules out any of the Pros. My requirements aren't very heavy compared to the creatives here. VSCode, Terraform, a few CLIs, a handful of Docker containers, and a whole heap of web browsing and video watching will not be very taxing for the M1.

They may keep the outgoing 13" as a lower end device along side the 14", it's quite common for Apple. They have the old non-retina 21" iMac for sale, they still have the Intel Mac Mini, iPhone Xr, etc. There has been for quite sometime a split in the 13" MBP line between the 2 port non-touch bar model and the beefier 4 port, better cooled, full fat 13" MBP.

The Air spec you posted will be excellent for those things for a long time.

After watching a lot of reviews, I went in the opposite direction and got a base model. My requirements are quite meagre and some people on YouTube were doing crazy things with their 8GB models and the machine wasn't breaking a sweat.

I just know that when the refreshed comes out I'll want it if the increased performance is as good as everyone expects the 2nd generation to be. I managed to pick it up with education discount so when I sell it I don't expect to lose too much.

Really want the M1 MacBook Pro and have the money ready, really close to purchasing the 8GB 512GB one, don’t like the Air design so defiantly want the Pro, although already have a 2018 4G iPad Pro 2018 256GB I use every day which fulfils all my needs.

So technically I don’t need the MacBook but I still really want one.....someone tell me what to do please :D

The 2 devices can serve different purposes but there is quite a lot of overlap for casual use. Why do you want a laptop?

Literally everything I’ll be doing on the MacBook I can do on the iPad, I don’t need it whatsoever just doesn’t stop me wanting one though :D

I mean if you have the money and nothing else better to drop £1300 on, then sure. Just keep in mind there will be more shiny toys out this year from Apple, and you’re in a position to wait and choose.

Thanks for the response think I’ll sit on it a bit £1300 is a lot of money to drop on something not really needed.

I'm the opposite. I don't like the Pro design. In terms of comfort it was a downgrade from my ancient air. Most notably that cut out on the track pad.

The iPad i mostly find useless for me. Far too limiting. typing and slower than a keyboard, gesturing is less efficient than a trackpad, and the thing can't support itself especially on soft or angled surface.

Anyway, with that little rant over. You could just buy a used Macbook Pro M1 and then sell it if something better comes along that you like.

Macs hold their value you won't have lost much. Any change on the 13/14" models is going to be another 9 months away yet anyway. If you want a 16" beast, then you might be in luck in Spring.
