I'm trying to decide what model to replace my 2019 13" Macbook Air and I can't decide whether to go with :-

13" Macbook Air M1 (is 8Gb enough or would 16Gb be worth the extra)/256GB

or

14" Macbook Pro M1 16GB/512Gb

I normally use my Macbook docked so not to fussed about the screen size. Mostly just running web apps (Chrome, Safari) with a dozen or so tabs open, plus some coding/scripting apps. I know everyone says 8Gb is enough and you don't need a powerful CPU/GPU for basic tasks but I find my current Macbook AIr is really sluggish when connected to an external 1440p monitor running multiple apps and a bunch of web tabs to the point where it impacts my worklflow?

Would the 8Gb Macbook Air M1 be OK with my workload (would 16Gb RAM make a noticeable difference?) or should I step up to the 14" Macbook Pro? Particularly keen to get the opinion of anyone who's used both the Macbook Air M1 and Macbook Pro 14" M1 regularly.

Coming from a 8GB intel to a 16GB 14" there is a big difference in simple everyday tasks ie Office and Edge, they are very snappy and responsive now.

Have a look at your activity monitor under memory and see what is used on your 2019 model.

I can't stop watching reviews of these beasts. My 2015 13" i5 8GB MacBook Pro really struggles in LR these days, it works but it's just frustrating sometimes.

£2399 for an upgrade though......hmmmmm

Is the extra £200 for the M1 Max worth it?
Or £400 for an extra 16GB RAM?

I went from a 2014 i5 8GB MacBook Pro to a 14" 16GB and Lr with my GFX100S files is lightning fast now, it was unusable on the i5.

You do not need the Max chip or 16GB for Lr, the base model with 1TB would be my choice for Lr

Well, the decision whether to keep the 16" was made for me when someone bought my 13" yesterday.
It's a great machine. I do wish it was a little lighter though.

Why did you buy the 16" and not the 14"

The 16" is way to big for anything other then as desktop replacement.

This thread is fully of idiots, much like the rest of these forums.

Most of you can't even afford this stuff, that's the funniest thing!

Over and out...

I guess a lot of people can afford it but most don’t need one. Shouldn’t stop us commenting about it :)
