I've heard this sort of thing about the i9 before - Did that CPU never really catch on?

I don’t think it was due to the i9 specifically. Just wondering if the newer MacOS versions are heavily optimised for Apple Silicon and Intel optimisation has taken a backseat.

Edit: reason I say this is every Intel-based Mac I’ve used of late seems slower than a Windows laptop - something which never used to be the case.

I was thinking generally, not specifically in Macs.

My 2017 i7 iMac still seems to running nicely, I don't use it for anything heavy at all these days but I've never noticed it slowing down.

All hail the new m2 max it's really nice they've partially solved some of the teething issues with m1 I've upgraded to 1 14" m2 max I just love the form factor

Thanks for posting that @MrRockliffe - I also have an i9 from 2018 with 32gb and it struggles with a few chrome tabs, Spotify/YouTube and gets really hot. Think it’s finally time for an upgrade!

Yup, battery life and temperature/fan noise is utterly amazing.

Honestly this has been the most compelling thing about the device.

The fans haven’t been audible at all yet.

There will always be new updates to the product though. Not sure I would be in a rush to get one unless your current device dies.

I think there’s a balance. Not only does the new product have to meet requirements, the old one needs to be insufficient.


Every new products meets requirements from Apple, generally, since they’re iterative upgrades from the last.

This is me right now. I very nearly pulled the trigger on the M2 Macbook Pro but I just can't do it with the titbits about M3 being a year or so away and having the new manufacturing process which means an instant improvement.

Exactly this. So much waste with everyone upgrading year after year. That goes for everything outside Apple too. I keep my phone for 3 years at an absolute minimum. Laptops 5+ minimum.
