*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

I ended up cancelling mine. It was highly specced to the point where the next iteration of the Studio would only be a few hundred more for the same overall spec but with the Max processor, extra ports etc that come with the Studio and I want to wait to see how the mini does under heavy load. Might order one again but will stick with the M1 Pro macbook for now.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you that will be receiving yours in the next few days.

I would have ordered one immediately if either the storage upgrades weren't so diabolically expensive, or they had made the chasis ever so slightly bigger and included an m.2 slot for a second internal drive. I know that external SSDs are a thing, I just don't like the idea of having something extra hanging out the back ruining the clean look (silly, i know)

The advantage of the current gen of M4 pros is that they have TB5 so external drives will be insanely fast. That being said, I like to just use my HD as a HD. I don't want to manage an external HD. Next Mac I get will likely have a 2TB internal.

One of the videos I watched (can't recall which one) pointed out that the TB5 speeds of 120gb/s apply to display only. When using for storage it defaults to TB4.
As I say, can't recall the video and I've not seen anyone else mention it but may be worth noting.

I'm looking forward to the proper reviews coming up this weekend, my favourite part of the process of buying something new is the research, and not the people on YouTube who put thumbnails showing them holding the new MM and waxing lyrical about it even though they're not basing it on having an actual unit just what Apple have said. I don't doubt it'll be very good but hands on can't be beat. Let's face it, if a film studio say they've made the best film of the year, who just takes them at their word? Also I do prefer the opinions of people on these forums when they have one as, I'm guessing, we're all real people who will have paid for the device.

Yeah, not expecting the world to change because of these - it's a new re-design based on what is possible with the new form factor of the internals, plus the usual % based increase on hardware. The new form factor will be nice though. I'm sure the YouTubers will have the pictures pulling silly faces either saying it's the best or the worst thing in the world to drive those views and sell those cleanmymac subscriptions.

I didn't think there were any drives that can hit TB5 max speeds yet (I know there are TB5 drives out there but they are super expensive). Very strange if you can't use TB5 for anything but displays though.

The more time you spend away from Youtube the more pathetic and cringy all these youtubers come across. The stupid "reaction face" thumbnails and their way of presenting which usually says nothing a hundred different ways.

As you say, its even worse when the device isn't even out yet. I kind of assumed some of the bigger ones would have it in their hands already.

I heard that too, it drops to 80gbps for data transfer. Which is still VERY fast, it is what PCI-e gen 4 nvme max out at? roughly?

I had to have a good trawl through my videos but I found it (Mistake #5 around 2m35s in) - the claim is that SSD transfer speeds are capped at 80Gbps.
I now wish it had been someone a little more reputable than Max Tech but make of it what you will.

My problem with review media is balancing it with outlets I review as "valid" - I kind of wish the likes of Gamernexus would dip their toes into doing Mac hardware reviews because I actually trust the guy's output. Linus? not so much. Quinn? I like that he's become so much more agnostic over the years to the degree that I have no problem checking out his opinion piece videos.

The problem particularly with Apple reviews is that they give earlier access to those that speak favourably of them. I would tend to trust LTT's opinion on Apple things a little more than the average YouTube channel seeing as they are effectively blacklisted by Apple for past negative coverage.

I've not been able to order mine yet as my sister is having trouble verifying on uni days as a teacher and I want the £100 off :p

When is it likely to be in store to buy and them have stock? I think I can get her to go in store with her work ID.

Planning the same myself. My sister is verified although I haven’t got round to actually placing the order yet - just too much on at the minute. Plus I figured I’ve waited this long I might as well wait and see what the actual reviews are like.

Is it a case of just entering a code or something during the regular checkout process?

Showing as 8th for pick up at Belfast store (I hesitate to say local as it’s 80 miles away). But not sure if there’s a difference between ordering for pick up and just having them lying around in stock.

Use that page on the website and when you go to checkout it will just ask you to log into uni days to verify you're a student/teacher. It shows collection unavailable for me now, delivery from the 18th.

Thanks. That’s as far as I got when I was checking it out for myself. Am I able to order on my own Apple account but use my sister’s unidays verification? I know this is a question that’s probably been asked and answered a hundred times over.

Didn't really occur to me but someone said that the only reason Apple have stuck 16gb as base memory is because their direction for now is AI and all their machines need that much memory to be able to drive it. Makes sense as they have kept the base storage at the embarrassingly low 256gb.
