*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

Didn't really occur to me but someone said that the only reason Apple have stuck 16gb as base memory is because their direction for now is AI and all their machines need that much memory to be able to drive it. Makes sense as they have kept the base storage at the embarrassingly low 256gb.
Rumours are it will take up to 6gb of system memory. I hope it can be disabled (I have 18gb!).

I had to have a good trawl through my videos but I found it (Mistake #5 around 2m35s in) - the claim is that SSD transfer speeds are capped at 80Gbps.
I now wish it had been someone a little more reputable than Max Tech but make of it what you will.

So....at 52mins in...he explains that

The actual rated speed spec is 80gbps, but it can do 120gbps if it sacrifices receiving speed. So it can do 120gbps 1 way.

I guess when it transfer a file, since it does checks, it is 80gbps.

Wow, that would be disappointing if 6gb was chewed by in ram for just AI. Surely it would be something that you could turn off / disable / only load up when needed.
I really hope it is (something that can be turned off).
AI, in its current guise, is of little to no use to me. I can’t even predict my behavioural/usage patterns so I don’t see how a machine is going to either! Unless AI can cook dinner and wash the dishes it can jog on :D

In general settings it has apple intelligence and siri, so if they're both off, they're not using resource...Right? I mean i would hope it works like that.

AI currently works on devices with 8GB with no noticeable difference to before so I can’t see it using 6GB on it’s own.

My Mini has shipped from China.
It's just a rumour I read. I suspect in reality the memory heavy version is still far away, as we are getting small bits of AI in each dot upgrade for Sequoia. Ii think .1 only had a couple of new features and .2 (in beta) will bring more.

What's more likely is it can take UP TO 6GB to perform at peak speed and will go slower and use less RAM in lower spec Apple Silicon machines. There has to be some truth in it, as I can't believe all Macs got moved to 16Gb for fun! That's a lot of lost upgrades from base spec that they will lose out on and I think it is usually 200 quid to go from 8Gb to 16Gb.
