*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

Odd thing going on with my Mac Mini M4, I am running a Dell G3223Q 32 inch 4K hdr monitor at 3840 x2160 resolution at 120hz, which all looks fine to my eyes.

For some reason the HDR content tab/button in display manager seems to turn itself off, I didn't have this issue with my previous Mac Mini.

Cheers all

Mate, i'm running an LG ultragear through displayport on M2 and I see people saying they have scaling problems, and i'm sitting back saying really?

I got sucked into apple since the iPhone. I had a very brief period on android and a PC but tbh that was more a time I couldn't afford Apple stuff :p

I'm actually working on the Mac mini today, it's working great. An absolute bargain for £500! Just need to sell my MacBook Pro now and then I can replace it with a more portable Air!

i was content with windows if i'm honest. Windows 7 was pretty much perfect, then they rocked the boat with 8 and I honestly thought they'd take user feedback on board when we pointed out that a touchcentric userface does not work well for desktop users (ironically, the same argument we have constantly with MacOS fanboys who think iPad pros should just run MacOS - I always disagree and point to Windows touch implementation on a desktop as a fine example of why it would suck). Windows 10 came out, it was...Better, but then it started getting more and more intrusive, until we're where we are with windows 11 where they want to push intelligence down our necks along with recall.

It was all I needed to jump ship. I have a linux machine for gaming, but my mac mini meets most of my needs. I momentarily had a regret when i found out that there was a possibility of the M4 being upgradable - but I don't think I'm going to lose any sleep over it.

I will say though, I'm half tempted to buy an M4 anyway, and turn my M2 into a NAS box.

I got sucked into the iPhone side of things because I found the Android side just wasn't as reliable in terms of phone product over the time. I used to mainly be android phones ( Samsung, Sony, Nokia phones) , but I invariably had an issue some point down the line after about a year and half of each phone which meant I needed to put the sim into something else lying about ... which was often an older iPhone. Multiple times this happened, and multiple times the iPhone stepped in, and did a sterling job... to the point I thought why bother with something else if the iPhones are that reliable (for me), and I've not looked back since.

I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with the absolute base model storage though. Although in the back of my head I keep saying to myself I actually want a base model studio, an M2 Max one ! ?

Two years ago, I switched to An iPhone from android because I was allowing myself to get distracted by rooting android and wanted more simplicity. a few short months after that, I thought to myself "hey iOS isn't that bad, maybe i'll enjoy an iPad to read comics on." it stops there, right? Yeah but then you see MacOS, and you think to yourself that maybe a less cluttered desktop would improve your workflow. Two years in, I've sleptwalked into an apple watch, an iPhone, an ipad, a macbook pro and a mac mini, and i'm looking for all my home automation stuff to be matter compatible.

God help me, i got indoctrinated into the apple ecosystem and I didn't even notice it.

I was all windows up until around 2007, but my almost annual routine involve formating my computer, running anti virus (this was before windows having a good built in one), firewall and lots of little maintenance to the machine. My sister had a Windows ME machine which was turd. I just got sick of the maintenance side of things and got an iMac and then never looked back. When iPhone 1 came out, you could get it for £130 anywhere and then jailbreak it rather than sign up to EE contract. So that point on I was in the ecosystem.

Only use a windows machine now when I need get a new retro hand held and need to install firmware into that as most of the home brew software are windows based..

Thats the thing though. People who like Apple products usually like them because they work well. You can argue all you like about how good value they are but they work well.

This was me about 10 years ago. Couldn't be trusted with an android so I got an iPhone and never looked back. My electronics are tools. I don't care if I can't set custom icons and a million other pointless things. I care about how user friendly they are. How nice they are to look at and use and how functional they are. I have iPhones, iPads, Macs. The only thing I never got on with is the Apple Watch because I found them uncomfortable.

I see them like an appliance, they work. I don't want to maintain them, I don't want to customise them or tweak them. I didn't care for these widget or these new customise features in the iOS update to catch up to Andriod.

They work, like a kettle.

I keep listening for my mac to make a grumble in the way the AIO air cooler in my pc does - nothing, and I can;t describe how much little touches like that improve the whole zen thing that I'm going for in my study.

It was a struggle for me to get there - I still like to do things like set a custom wallpaper, but custom icons, sideloading and what have you aren't really things that bother me as much as they used to.

Have you guys watched any of the teardowns? The way they've done it is fascinating.

I watched a couple. I saw one guy removed the power button and taped it on the outside on the back !

Lots of 3D clip on buttons appearing today just lever the button externally.
But why? I still don't understand all the comments and now this. How often do people actually need to press the power button? I don't think I've pressed the power button on my MacBook Air for over a year, can't imagine it'll be any different when getting a Mini.

I too am puzzled. Why the need for crap finish 3d printed gumph? I turned mine on when I got it. That was 4/5 days ago? Sleep is fine.

I’m not against 3d printed parts but sometimes people are looking to fix problems that aren’t there.

I can understand it, I never used to shut down my Macs but with the increase in energy cost, I always shut down the office iMac and the Studio in my Shack every day. It's only pennies a year but it all adds up.

See that's just boring - I've always had the attitude that it's fun to break things every now and then, just so you can take the time to figure out how to put it all back together again yourself.

I'm doing quality testing for Apple, they don't know it but I am. I want to see what the press life is for the power button. I'm going to send Apple an invoice for £200 per doubling of clicks I do.
