*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

I couldn't care less what people do. Switch it off, don't switch it off. Put it in a silly case, don't put it in a silly case. I'll say what I think but I don't actually care what people do :-)

People are going a bit over the top with the power button though. Acting like its an absolute horror show. I mean, its not like they put the charging port for a wireless mouse on the bottom of it. Now that would be silly! :p

But why? I still don't understand all the comments and now this. How often do people actually need to press the power button? I don't think I've pressed the power button on my MacBook Air for over a year, can't imagine it'll be any different when getting a Mini.

That's a question for Apple why have a button if you put it in a place where you don't want people to use it.

Personally I turn off my laptop as I might go days even weeks without using it and want minimal battery drain after I've charged it. I switch between a number of machines, so they get moved around.

If you're someone who uses the same machine solely or daily in the same location then I could see why you'd use sleep. Or someone constantly coming back to a machine Personally I don't do that.

Horses for courses.

On my Air it really annoys me that it turns itself on constantly. Often does it as I put it away.

They are on a par to be honest. Dumb.

That said the mini is so small and you generally don't use a power button on a desktop that much.

I'm doing quality testing for Apple, they don't know it but I am. I want to see what the press life is for the power button. I'm going to send Apple an invoice for £200 per doubling of clicks I do.
I like this thinking, but we could surely optimise the process by automating it. A bit of mechano here, some lateral thinking there and boom. We havea. switcher onerer. type. thingie.

Turning it off and on is just like starting up a car, it will wear all components out*
Keep it turned on and put it to sleep you psychos

No idea about the watch, never interests me. My Mini is always in sleep more, press the touch id wakes everything up. Also it is under the desk on a mount (and its the studio with the switch on the back) so never want to keep going under it to turn it on..not with a dodgy back. Never turned my macs off since Mac Mini 2012....

Ah, yes it does. Apple Watch does the Touch ID thing.

Woke up this morning to a shipment notification from Apple! My mini should be with me on the 11th, so much for 20th-22nd delivery estimate:cool:

My Studio Display and other accessories are due over the weekend, so it's perfect timing!
All setup and restored from Time Machine backup. I haven't had enough time to really put it through it's paces, but from initial impressions it looks and performs great!

What machine (and Mac OS) did you upgrade from?

The one and only time I did it from back up, it broke the Mac. I went from a 2015 MBP to a M1 Mac mini at work and Adobe wouldn't work regardless on how many times I uninstall and reinstall the apps. I had to format and start again.

Since my iMac is 2012....I am going to have to start again, just need to back up my LR library and point it back to it really. Download 2 Adobe apps, VLC, Firefox and Chrome and then it's done.

I went from an iMac (Late 2013) running Ventura via OCLP. Everything appears to have restored ok but I've not had a chance to properly check everything yet.

Guys, I found what is by far the sexiest deskmat i've seen in ages, and I'm not sure I can resist the urge to pick it up: https://www.journeyofficial.eu
I saw these a year or 2 ago and did toy with buying one, they’re very nice as you say. However, I couldn’t justify the cost for what is essentially a wireless charging pad.

Now...I know that and you know that - however, you and I also know that we're the type of people that have to resist the urge sometimes to pull the trigger on an apple product just to get a dopamine hit of that sweet, sweet unboxing experience.

And this is the harsh reality :D
My attention is now slowly turning away from the Mac Mini and towards the M4 Pro 14” MacBook Pro.
Since buying the original 16” in 2019 I said I’d never buy the smaller screen version again as I tended to use it as a desktop replacement rather than a portable carry-round. However, since picking up the Studio Display I no longer need the larger 16” display when at the desk. It’s whether I can live with the 14” when sofa surfing etc.
