*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

Mwahahahaha.....got all screens working including a large 4 LG screen for movie stuff, no probs but a lot of "how the heck does it do that again?" stuff on my part.

That is an interesting idea, but don't images appear distorted at that viewing angle?

I've got a Mac Mini on Pre-order and realised I have no spare HDMI 2.1 cables. In fact the only HDMI 2.1 cable I have came with my monitor and is being used with my PC. My monitor will do 4K 240hz over HDMI 2.1 with DSC and it has 2x HDMI 2.1 inputs.

So I've ordered a Kenable Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 Cable 8K 60Hz / 4K 120Hz 48Gbps White Plug 1m...

Therefore I should be able to get 4K 240hz over HDMI with the Mac Mini and this cable.

I'm fairly sure you're gonna be limited to 120 or 144hz over HDMI. I'm certain that is the case with M3 Pro at least, that I have and the HDMI is the same.

No big deal, as I can't think of anything apart from a few games that would benefit 240hz.

Got my info from here…

Says with the Mac mini with Apple M4 you can…
  • Connect up to two displays, one with up to 5K resolution at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt, and one with up to 8K resolution at 60 Hz or 4K resolution at 240 Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI.
But as you say 120hz would be fine and would need a HDMI 2.1 cable anyway. As far as I’m aware HDMI 2.1 can only do 4K 240hz with DSC. You need DisplayPort 2.1 to do it without DSC.

I stand corrected, or it's improved from M3!

I tried some (Acer or Asus) gaming monitor with my MBP about a year ago and it only went to 120hz in the display options whereas the screen supported 145 or 166.

Finally up and running, I notice that since I've switched to Mac, my NAS no longer hibernates. Does spotlight index files on the NAS?

I didn't realise how hot M.2 NVME drives ran. My OWC enclosure gets really warm. It's one big heatsink, shows it's doing its job I suppose.

I guess it depends on how hard you're using it. My drive is 38 degrees in the OWC enclosure which is 5 degrees cooler than I was getting when installed in the fan assisted U-Green enclosure I was originally using! The U-Green was better for warming my hands

It’s just that I didn’t realize how hot they run, I have had them inside a PC before. I’m also glad I went with OWC, what a good job it does.

I stopped Spotlight from indexing it.

15.2 dropped boys and girls, just in case you didn't get ininduated with notifications yet. Is anyone actually bothering to turn intelligence on to see if it affects performance?

It would still run just as hot in a PC and with similar temp, or even higher temp? Since I don't know any heatsinks on a SSD inside a PC are this big.

The 6 NVME I have in my pc idle at around 31-35c. When i copy a shedload of data to one, it can go up to 60. Then it rapidly drops back to 30s. 2x 980pro 3 x wd950x and 1 x crucial p5 plus. They have very thin basic heatsinks and a few of those rubber pads that probably make no difference !

Iirc most decent drives can happily idle at 40-45c plus and peak at 70c before throttling.

Just because you use them in a Mac instead of windows makes no difference, they are designed to go to higher temps and will not die!

Just had to get it off my chest as people are talking like NVME will blow up with a bit of heat!

Na, I'll let someone else do the beta testing on that one!
I HAVE enabled it on my phone to see how it goes but I've little need/use for it - even less so on my Mac.
