*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

Finally got my new mac mini. This thing is so dinky. Its really light as well. I almost wish they had stuck something in there to give it a bit more heft.

First few thoughts:
  • Its super fast - my old M1 Pro wasn't any slouch but this is clearly much faster. I will do some actual tests later on it with some of my actual workflows
  • Got quite warm after migration and set up but since then its been room temp. Fans never kicked in audibly.
  • Cleans up my desk nicely - old MBP was in a stand which stuck out and this is nice and clean.
  • The speaker on its crap. Thats not to say its not functional but even with the macbook in clamshell all the time the sound was so much better. Hadn't really considered that but its not an issue, I have external speakers, just an observation.
  • Using the new external SSD to restore from timemachine was super fast. Maybe took 15 minutes to move about 600gb to the mini.
DHL delivered it earlier today and I was super tempted to claim it was stolen. They just left £2500 of computer on my doorstep, knocked and rang the bell and off they went. Ridiculous.

Just ran a small build on a site I am working on and on the old M1 Pro it took 38s and on the new one it took 19s. Gonna pay for itself in days :p

Jumped on one of these and bought some external storage.

Are you all storing your photos with the Apple photos app and changing the default location to your external drive?

I wanted to store all my photos and ICloud files locally as well, but seemingly you can’t easily change the default location from the internal drive. Am I missing something?

I tried some (Acer or Asus) gaming monitor with my MBP about a year ago and it only went to 120hz in the display options whereas the screen supported 145 or 166.
Received my Mac Mini today. I ordered it online as my local Apple store had no stock and no ETA. Sods law the day after I placed my online order my local Apple store got some stock.

That was last Thursday, I only paid £4.87 more due to the shipping costs but I was more annoyed about the fact I could have had it sooner. But I've got it now so all good.

Only thing is I can't set the display to 4K 3840*2160 everything looks too small. I've had to set it to 3008*1692. The refresh rate is 240 Hz which is good I suppose.

As it happens I had a phone call from my local Apple store saying my pre-order was in stock, had to tell them to cancel it. Took them since last Thursday to contact me.

The fans never kick in noticably, and the Mac will happily run to 100c and start throttling the SoC instead of speeding the fans up. If you want the fan to ramp up properly you need to install a third-party app like TG Pro.

I've noticed a little bug with mine, if I put it into sleep, it wakes the monitor up every 10 minutes or so then it goes back into standby. So I'm going to shut it down instead from now on, the power button isn't hard to reach.

I can’t complain even my Windows 11 machine can’t display 4K 3840*2160 without scaling to 150%. With the Mac you have to set a lower resolution instead. Main thing is that it supports 240 Hz thanks to the Mac Mini, my monitor and the HDMI 2.1 cable I bought.
