*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

I'm somewhat curious if the M4 Pro is faster than the M1 Max.

Much faster CPU. M1 Max as 8P-2E cores. M4 Pro is 8P-4E or 10P-4E. Each M4-series P core is about 60% faster than M1 series cores. Overall, you should expect ~80% more MT performance, 60% more ST performance.

GPU is a bit more complicated, 20-core M4 Pro should be roughly similar to the 32-core M1 Max GPU.

Yes.

I think the Base M4 is about the same speed as the M1 Max.

Thank you both. Makes me wonder if an M4 Pro mini would be an OK upgrade from my M1 Max Studio.

I have the M1 Max studio and considered it, eventually decided agianst it because my M1 Max studio is more than enough for what I typically do as I've transitioned my work to a separate machine (M3 Max MBP).

This mindset is what kept me from upgrading my iMac for so many years. I should have done it back in 2020, but it still works and does everything I needed to do.

It's a need vs want thing, I'd love a M4-based machine but looking at other things, my gaming machine needs a better GPU and I need a new NAS, so this one is definitely lower priority. I used a 27" iMac (2017 model) until 2022 for the same reasons.

Yup, I only updated because the latest Adobe doesn't run on Catalina anymore, YouTube is being really slow on Safari some reason (I had formatted the HD about a year ago too). Whatsapp App doesn't work anymore either. I have to use the web portal, plus a few other bugs.

A new NAS is more higher on the priority list.

I wouldn't mind doing it to an old, redundant Mac mini later down the line, but there is no way I would be doing it to a new one with warranty, especially within the return period.

I remember upgrading the HDD to SSD inside my 2010 MBP, even after I cloned the drive first, it wouldn't boot. I had to set up TRIM and other stuff inside terminal. I feels like I was looking at the matrix putting in code.

How experienced are you with terminal, out of interest?

also, Happy new year everyone - I hope you have a most excellent 2028.
