****The Official 5G Home Broadband Thread**** (Three/EE/Vodafone/etc)

The sheer frustration of dealing with ISPs never changes does it.

My 5G signal (Three Network) has been down for a week now, just getting crappy 4G speeds, yet they tell me nothing is wrong when i go through tech support.

Its like talking to a brick wall, so long as their screen tells them everything is OK, sitting hundreds of miles away, they refuse to do anything about it.

I walk past their 5G transmitter on a regular basis, and twice so far, I've stood less than 100 metres from it and still my phone will not get a 5G signal!

Absolute cretins.

This is what I'm getting with Three in my area -

We’re fixing an issue with our network in this area

We’re sorry for any disruption you experience. Our engineers are working on masts nearby, which means the rest of our network is handling more traffic than usual.

Updates on our work will be posted here. We’re working as fast as we can to build a better, stronger network in your area.

You can find more help and advice below. And you can read more about our Big Network Build here.

I must admit EE are great for support. I had a few 5g issues recently and the the team were great. Telling me all about the masts in the area, previous issues, outstanding engineer works, planned works, etc. Full on detailed. I loved it. Not just script monkeys. Mind it did take about half an hour each time on hold to finally get through. But once off hold, all very thorough diagnosis and help.

'No Network Errors reported' is all I get when I enter my postcode into the network checker.

Its just a total waste of time trying to deal with anyone at Three, all you have left is that enough people in the area complain about it and they finally despatch an actual, real, human being to see what's going on.

Its the constant onus put on the customer to prove there is something wrong with their network rather than your hardware, that makes dealing with ISPs such a nightmare.

Another Three user here with shocking internet at the moment, wondered why my Apple TV picture was dropping resolution and ran a speed test with the result showing around 5-7 mb/s, down from around 100+

you don’t want to be too close to the mast - peak 5G at ground level is probably 500m from the mast and any close than that it will get worse as you get closer.

And boom! just like that, after a week of lousy, slow 4G speeds, my 5G signal has returned as quickly as it went!

After many wasted hours with Three support (HA!), not so much as an acknowledgement on their part of there actually ever being any network fault whatsoever, plenty of hints from them that it must be my phone/sim that are faulty and there is nothing that can be done, because the computer tells me everything is working just fine and if the computer says so, you really you shouldn't be wasting our time with made up stuff like this..no 5G signal you say?, Preposterous, the very idea!

ISP's..always trying to pass the buck onto the customer.

I'd like a little advice on what equipment id need to move from my Plusnet broadband to a 5G system.

Currently i have an OpenReach Modem feeding a Mikrotik hAP ac3 router which is downstairs and connects (via a cable) to a Mikrotik hAP ac2 upstairs. We get good WiFi coverage around the house with this system but the speed is limited to 20M/5M from Plusnet - cant get any faster due to location.

I get a 5G signal (151up, 10down, 29ms ping, 4ms jitter) in the house using a Samsung S21 and Voxi (voda) SIM, so was wondering whether i can use a 5G box of some sort to plug into the hAP ac3 unit (in place of openreach modem) or do i just use a 5G box in place of the hAP ac3?

What equipment should i be looking at to move from Plusnet to 5G?

Mikrotik Chateau 5G if you want similar to what you have or Mikrotik Chateau 5G AX if you want WiFi6 as well.

Are these 5G routers more powerful than phones for picking up 5G signals?
Could you plug in an external antenna outside your house that improves the signal?

Are they more powerful? No.

Can you add an external antenna? On many, yes. But not all.

So if my phone isn't picking up a 5G signal on EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone (I've tried them all) I'm not going to get a better signal with a 5G router and external antenna?
Go 200 yards from my house and I'm hitting good speeds.

5G is a local technology. You’ll need a closer mast to get signal. It’s very new technology. Unless you need it right now I’d give it a bodyswerve for 18 months. In most areas you get similar aggregated 4G speeds (150-200Mbps) anyway. Once they put up more local nodes then it will be worth ditching the landline and going all-in on wireless.

I'm guessing this has been asked already in the thread but I can't find it, is Three 5g any good for online gaming as in reasonable pings ?

Apologies if this information is somewhere already but I have scoured the posts on here (and elsewhere) and need some advice/help.

I'm on Three 5G Broadband and have a three supplied Huawei 5G CPE Pro. Last week I was upgraded (even cheaper deal) to a new Zyxel NR5103E and they didn't want the Huawei back so I now have both hubs. Both hubs have the option in their GUIs to put them in bridge mode and the Zyxel can be put in Bridge mode or Cellular passthrough mode.

I have an ASUS RT-AX86U which I need to use for a variety of reasons so want to put the 3 hub into Bridge mode. However I am a little confused as to what settings I should be putting into the ASUS for :

1) WAN Connection Type
2) Username & Password

Secondly, assuming the Zyxel is the better option (I might go for an external aerial too), should I be putting it in Bridge Mode or Cellular Passthrough mode? I am inclined to go with Bridge mode but I am not a networking guru and fairly new to all this so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!

(Also is there a particular Ethernet port that gets used on the Router when in Bridge mode or should I just plug someething into it and see what there is there???)

Thank you so very much for your help on this. I spent yesterday going a little crazy trying to find out answers... I appreciate I was probably just googling the wrong questions. At least I found this Forum!!!!!
