** The Official 8800GT 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

As stated I have found that my XFX xxxExtreme OC 640MB GTS Edition is definetly faster than the smaller 512MB GT..... Sweet as  My friends GT stutters when the AA is raised in games when my XFX xxxExtreme OC 640MB GTS Edition glides through, must be the higher amount of memory, GTS 640MB = GT's 512MB and the biggest diffrence being the Bus Bandwidth, GTS 320Bit  and the GT's smaller 256Bit, I do like my games with the AA ramped up but with the GT's smaller memory and smaller 256Bit Buswidth its not a good upgrade from a GTS...:D Only until the G92's arrive early next year, will we will see a bigger diffrence in performance...

The new GTS are coming this month.

You mention nothing of what res you game at and what levels of AA you use.

The extra SP's make up for the smaller bandwidth and this is clearly been proven in benchmarks.

@ 1680x 1050 (the res I game at) the GT is the better card. Not just by a litlle but by a lot.

Just the stock cooler (fan @ 60%)

O/clocking with rivatuner and no artifacts during 06 - both my GTS and GTX
shot there bolt at 634 core on the forest bench.

Not tried it during normal gaming as i was only messing trying to get the
upper limit (Was happy with 700) - but runs 3dmark06 fine and I noticed
Devious was getting 765 on the core on his GT so I thought i would ramp it
up a bit.

Temps vary between 73 - 78c over the 4 tests.

You must be in a cold room.

Paws off ;)

Should i just keep going until any Freezing or Artifracts happen in 06 ?

Or should i use ATI Tool to find the upper limits ?

Using Rivatuner atm

You must be in a cold room.

He keeps his PC in the chiller.
I gonan have a bash at sorting my cooling out on them next week, seems like the list of things I need to do to my PC is now growing and growing.
I'm not too happy about spending more money on additiional aftermarket sinks and fans for the cards, and certainly dont want to start taking it to pieces.
Will need to cut into my side window to hold an 80MM fan that points at the cards, rather than it standing on an egg cup. Gotta do it in a way that it looks smart as these cards look pretty good lined up in SLI with the shiny logo on the side. Egg cup and cheap black fan does it no justice. lol

Something wrong with your friends setup, with AA I dont get any stutters now with the 8800GT, not normal to get stutters.

Scan for artifacts in ATi tool and watch carefully for any yellow dots, even if it says there is no artifacts there may be.

Right,

I have done the compare thingy like you do to post on the 06 scoring thread.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=3639399

Does this give enough info ? As I cannot see Core / memory info.

If not tell me what would be a better way to display it.

That score doest not add up with the clocks you say you have run the bench at, compared to my score, your SM2/SM3 score is less than mine, that's with my clocks at 720/1780/1000, a quad does not make any difference in the SM2/3 benches, just the cpu bench.

Thought the 8800GT IS G92??

All reviews on various websites have comfirmed that the GT is indeed faster, plus there's a thread here comparing the two and the GT clearly has an edge in almost all games even when AA is on, so as said something must be up on "your mate's rig". Besides you didn't even mention what the games are?

Lol, yea the 8800GT is G92 and the GT is faster than a GTS, an overclocked GT is faster than any GTS end of dunno what BFG_9000 is on about tbh his GTS is NOT faster than the overclocked GT's.

Wrong Will, the sm2/3 tests are not optimised for quad cores so a cor2 at 3.6 will give the same performance as a quad at 3.6 in the GFX tests.

Nice score anyway, not too far out but I would have expected more with your higher clocks :)
