******** The Official amateur radio thread ********

Thanks Chris.

The plot above was on 20m using the Hexbeam at around 35ft AGL - If you've got a 60ft mast then a Hex will work really well with the extra height.

Last night I was heard by YV4GJN in Venezuela using WSPR on 30m with just a random length doublet sloping E-W from 30ft to 20ft through an SGC Smartuner so that's south America covered :) I've not reached VK7 yet with just the 150mW but been heard there a few times on 40m WSPR using 5W from the TS-590.

I'll try and post some photos of my "other extreme" project, the HV supply is nearly done, now working on converting an RF generator RF deck to go on 20 meters :) I am doing it with a US friend over here recuperating from a bike accident, you know the Yanks, bigger is of course, better :)

I have a foundation license, really need to complete my elecraft kit and set up a new aerial in my current house and most probably learn all the procedures again because it's been a while!

Hi,

I used to be licensed way back in the Mid 80's through to the early 90's (G1 Callsign) Keep looking at things thinking i should look at it all again and the digital modes sound kind of interesting as I dont get much time these days with work and young kids.

Just need to send off for the license once more and that needs me to find the relevant paperwork after 3 house moves!

The Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) are currently offering membership to anyone in the UK for just £1 to help celebrate their centenary. Membership is usually over £50 so this is a significant saving.

If you have any interest in radio, it's a decent enough society to join, the monthly magazine 'RadCom' is worth the annual fee by itself.

So you want to join the RSGB for just a quid, head over to http://www.rsgb.org/poundmember and sign up (offer valid until 14th July 2013).

The form is a little odd, it requires Java and it seems to be a little temperamental in some browsers but it does work in IE.

Yes, there are a few of us, I am now very active on low frequency 136kHz with a 1kW home brew transmitter. Only a couple of loading coil fires so far, need to try harder ;) 2E0ILY is the call sign.

Now thats cool, I have always been curious about ULF - I presume you must have quite an antenna for that ? <Callsign removed as I am being stalked around the web! Ask if you want it> here, been dragging my feet getting to intermediate.

Hi all, been thinking of taking the Foundation Licence.
How hard is it? Think my local club is London Bridge.

If you have any prior knowledge or interest in radio, electronics or computing its a walk in the park - easy multiple choice, with a few "odd" answers. The official RSGB book will get you there for cheaps, although I would still recommend a course+exam combo, simply for the people you meet and the benefit of their experience! Thanks buddy,

I picked a puxxing px888k dual band so would love to learn how to use it properly with repeaters and other Hammers. :D

Go for it :)

ULF is quite interesting, it's not something I've really dabbled in yet. I believe there are a few QRSS/WSPR grabbers on both 136 and 475kHz which could interest me though. I'm running a mixture of QRSS/WSPR/Slow Hell and CW in a single ten minute frame with around 200mW on 30m at the moment. I tend to sit on one band for anything between two weeks and a month just seeing how well the signal propagates around the world.

It's odd, when it comes to actually making QSOs, the more power the better but I also love throwing flea power into an aerial to see where I can be heard!

I've just replaced my Kenwood TM-D710GE in the Feekmobile with an Icom ID-5100E because we've now got a DSTAR repeater locally and I thought that I really ought to be able to use it as I'm secretary of the local group. I liked the wireless so much that I've got a second one for the shack even though I'm still not 100% convinced about DSTAR.

If it's anything like where I live it'll put you off for life :p 2m FM is a graveyard, just the same old duffers chatting about what medication they are taking.

Get on one of the web SDRs and have a listen - http://hackgreensdr.org:8901/ (40m, 80m & 160m) tends to be best options for action when its dark. Move the yellow marker to where there's a line on the waterfall and away you go.

(full list of SDR's here http://websdr.org/)

Mike.

Hey Mike, I was just reading all back through this thread and I spotted your Kanga QRSS transmitter and wondered if you ever got it going? Hans Summers has done a lot of work with new kits over the last couple of years and the U3S is the latest model. All bells and whistles, GPS synchronised and with an OCXO instead of the DDS module. Mine's running all the time and if you did join the Knights mailing list, you'll see a lot of people using them.

Sure that's not 160, 80 or 40m? ;)
