In my recent move to the Apple ecosystem, I recently picked up a 2021 ATV. I think I may be missing out on something because I’m failing to see what makes it a rough £100 better than a Roku 4K. I’ve had firetv sticks, Google Chromecast and a couple of Rokus. The ATV feels definitely faster with a picture that seems a bit crispier but I feel like I’m probably missing something here. My wife can’t be convinced to ditch the Roku either, she thinks I’m crazy for pick up the ATV :)

I will say that if you've got AirPods, the sync is great. It is probably the best device for matching frame rate and dynamic range across all the apps and playing ATV+/iTunes content you get higher bitrates than using the ATV+ app say on your Roku. But the majority of people aren't really going to notice or be that bothered. So no you're not missing anything really.

It's a nice device to tie in with the rest of your other Apple gear but definitely not a necessity.

The two things I would struggle to live without are pasting passwords from my iPhone as well as using my AirPods with it. I can watch loud stuff to my hearts content without risking annoying my mrs or waking the baby. Otherwise I would probably have an Nvidia Shield but they're not so cheap anymore.

For me i find my 4K ATV is far better by a long way for looking through the films and for the film info of the ones i bought on itunes then my TV built in apple app
Plus i don't think my TV built in Apple app even has the itune movie store

That might be part of it, I don’t have any content purchased from Apple and mostly use streaming apps. I’ve had a tv+ subscription since it launched but that’s about it. So for me it’s no better than a 4K Roku stick, it even has Airplay.
I do like how it easily connects to airpods but whether that’s worth the extra cost, I remain very skeptical.

I mean unless anyone specifically asks me about the Apple TV, if they ask me to recommend a device I’love always say the Fire TV gear because they are cheap and have all the UK catch-up apps.

This is pretty much my use case. Also, always saw the atv as much more performant than other systems

Ok, so I don't have Apple TV, but I do have a baby and Android TV!... I've always been scared to use headphones incase I don't hear the baby monitor.

Isn’t Android TV missing some apps in the UK? I’m pretty sure that was the reason for me to get a Roku in the first place. Definitely All4 and NowTV were missing at the very least.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't know. I have it because it's built into our TV and only use it for Plex, Netflix and Disney+

It’s all complicated with that blasted Chromecast. Now TV got added to the new HD CC, but still isn’t available on the 4K one. Very strange.

All 4 still not on there.

FYI iPlayer for atv (I’m running 4k gen 1) has been updated. Only thing I’ve noticed is the interface when playing something/watching something live. Still no profiles.

The fact they still don’t have 4K HDR like my LG OLED app does is grim.

World Cup games and some shows are in UHD HDR but not on the atv.

Yes, frustratingly down to lack of HLG support. Though Sigmund Judge on twitter reckons there's ref to 4k in the code of the new app so the new appletv should get it at least.

So in a nut shell, if you were to go out tomorrow and buy a device for yourself. What would you get? ATV, Firestick or Roku?

I've got a problem with my AppleTV, where it won't install the Twitch app. It'll just keep spinning in the app store but won't download. I'm wondering if a factory reset would fix the issue.

I mean, thinking about it would clean things up, as I've got apps on there that I don't need anymore.
