Comet Siding Spring will be making a close pass by Mars on October 19th, so close that NASA is taking steps to protect their spacecraft orbiting Mars from a potential increase in micrometeorite strikes.

Here's what C/2013 A1 Siding Spring looked like yesterday as seen from the iTelescope.net T30 telescope in Siding Spring, Australia. It passed by several galaxies including NGC 1316 and NGC 1317 in the top right corner, and NGC 1310 in the bottom right corner.

Another small galaxy, ESO 301-8, is just above the comet. These are R filtered 60 second exposures.
