***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

What about upgrading the harddrive? Does it use a standard connection I.E. IDE and come with usual dimensions? Cheers

What hard drive? :D it uses a SSD for its internal drive and many people are simply soldering a 16GB flash drive into an internal USB connection to add memory, another way is to use a 1.8" HDD and solder that inside.

apart from actually modding your Eee the only way to expand the space is to use a SD/SDHC card or a external device.

Edit: yes it takes standard Laptop DDR2

My Eee PC just arrived, and I am posting from it now.

My first impressions are good (of the device). The exterior aesthetics are certainly respectable, and the Xandros operating system is appealing to me more than I initially expected it to.

The keyboard is somewhat small, however I am getting used to the keys, and my typing speed (albeit slow in comparison with that of some people) is certainly increasing as I type more.

The machine is silent, even when doing a relatively (in terms of this particular device) intensive task, one cannot hear it.

The resolution of the screen does not seem to be a problem (at the moment). This website ("Overclockers UK") displays well on the screen, which I hasten to add is rather sharp, and certainly is very good for anyone whose objectives for the system are reasonable.

The inclusion of a case with the Asus Eee PC is certainly a smart one as it fits with the general design of the system, and is a rather useful size.

I recommend this device to anyone who wishes to have a low-cost, small-form-factor device whose capabilities far extend the "internet system" which all too many devices seem to target (solely).

Hmmm I dno if I want one now - seems you cant seem to use square brackets which for me would be [very] disappointing :(:p...

hi all, ive been following the thread daily, for those that have them, what are they like for video? ie TV programs / movies in xvid format? i assume it play them ok? does the operating system have all the required codecs already? as i would have no idea how to add a codec in linux hehe.

also, could i install XP onto an SD card and have a dual boot machine? keeping the original os intact?

thanks guys

Andy

Has anyone got bluetooth dongles working, or do they need additional drivers for the linux?
I plugged one in but I cant see much support for it. XP supports it, but I was looking for the equivilent in the linux.

Just seen that the White is out of stock, and the Black is more expensive..if i get one..do i wait..do i get black/white.. hmmm

i have opera browser installed (love fit to with+ proper full screen features) but noticed it was caching a lot of mb of data. so to cut back on writes i have disabled cache this a good thing to do? no noticeable browsing speed reduction so far.

does FF cache the same way?

I played xvid, and .divx from usb flash drive straight out of the box, no problems.

Would the "Eee" be any good for a everyday laptop, to be used as a main system? As I am completely fed up with my current PC.

Sorry if that sounds stupid..

i like mine (apart from my stuck pixel). it is 100% a "normal" laptop but physically small, with lowly specs of 900(?)mhz processor, 512mb ram, 4gb "hdd", and 800x480 res.

so go for it if:

you think those specs are acceptable,
you want a significantly smaller and more portable laptop, and
you dont mind the the obviously necessary sacrifice of having to make do with a small keyboard.
