** The Official ASUS P5N-E SLI & Ultra 650i Thread **

Has anyone tried OCing a quad core in this board yet?

I had a quick skim over the thread and didn't see anything... am getting this and q6600 :S

i have jus got my quad core and overclocking with this board is awful. max overclock i get is 2.7Ghz. i've seen people with the same board wiv clocks of 3Ghz+.

The later Bios's dont allow a very high FSB which no good for me as my E6300 has a multi of 7 . The 0401 Bios lets me hit 3.4ghz but the 0801 bios limits me to 3ghz.
you also need to whack the full amount of volts on this mobo if you want a high fsb and then it needs active cooling.

Getting a good overclock is not guaranteed. The CPU, motherboard, RAM and the loose nut behind the keyboard must all be just right to get the optimal overclock. The P5N-E SLi is a great dual-core motherboard, but it's 3-phase VRM struggles with Quad-Cores, not least because of the truly horrible Vdroop. Quads suck power and you need a motherboard that can deliver power smoothly and consistently, which is something the P5N-E SLI struggles to do unless you really crank up the volts and, as pegasus1 says, actively cool the Northbridge.

Given the fact that the latest BIOS is a beta, I'm hoping that means there will be another one on the way at some point. With 0801 and 0703 my overclock is severely limited, and while that is fine with my current 0608, my RAM doesn't seem stable even at stock speeds.

I am using the original bios it came with :) It runs stable at 3.4ghz. I did run it at 3.6 but was worried about the amount of volts I had to send thru the cpu which was running too hot for my liking. I thought as its so stable I didnt want to break anything upgrading the bios for no reason.

One quick question tho. Could someone confirm if you can boot from a HDD connected thru one of the USB ports?

Cheers

Well an update

Left pc on overnight as usual and it was frozen when i got up :(
Rebooted and it froze again within half an hour.

Then i tried 0703 and couldnt even get to windows with that one so ive had to go back to 0608.

Luckily Q6600 support was added in 0608

For me the later bios's didnt bring anything usefull, i spose i would only update if i wanted 2 x 2gig mem support but then id need a CPU with a higher multi to get a decent OC.

Sorry, there are nearly 90 pages here so... has anyone got either a Tuniq Tower 120 or a Thermalright Ultra-120 on this board ? Do they clear the northbridge heatsink OK ? And I wonder if they fit in a Lian-Li PC7 case ?

thanks

gutted, keep trying though, I'm sure you will get your 4 sticks stable at their rated speed soon :)

I seem to be running quite nicely on this board.... it's nothing phenomenol - but ok for £60.

Upped the cpu to 333x9 (3GHz) & it's stable with 1.4V and 1.3XXV on the northbridge.

4x1GB Crucial Anniversary running @ 3-3-3-10 2T @ 667MHz

Yes Tuniq tower fits with a small amount of filing. I posted pictures about 50 pages ago :)

Just got a Q6600 and im pleased that it works nice in this board and its sitting pretty at 3Ghz also :)

Soo pleased i dont need a new board as i wanted to keep the option of SLI at a later date :)

Hello, i've just tried my hand at overclocking the FSB and i only managed to get it from 1066 to 1166, after which my computer wont get to the first screen to get into the bios.

Any ideas, i'm a total n00b at overclocking btw.
